I HATE bus drivers that stick their indicator on and pull out of bus stops right in front of cars and expect them to brake sharply to avoid running into the back of them. It's nothing short of dangerous driving and any bus driver caught doing so should lose their job instantly in my opinion. I've seen loads of near misses from these pr1cks who seem to think they own the road just because of some ADVICE in the highway code. There is no law that says I have to let you out of a bus stop or junction so stop being an arrogant pr1ck and automatically assuming I'm going to do it because I'm not. I'm on the road and YOU are pulling out into my path now turn your !!!!!!! indicator off and wait like the rest of us have to instead of putting my life, your life and the life of all your passengers at risk just because you're in a big bus and like to think you're important.

Lorry drivers get a bad rep but i've never seen them do what bus drivers do every single day.

Its a pain in the backside but I can see why they do it.Afterall, who wants to be stuck behind a bus? They could be waiting a long time to get out of that bus stop, then the next one and the one after that. They have timetables to try and keep to and its a no-win situation really.

    You are an idiot.

The highway code is not "advice"............. what a tool you really are. Its a set of rules issued by the Government to make our roads safer.

    AND............

"223 Buses, coaches and trams. Give priority to these vehicles when you can do so safely, especially when they signal to pull away from stops. Look out for people getting off a bus or tram and crossing the road."

What this means, is dont think you are funny by accelerating so that the indicating bus cant pull out. The amount of people who do this and think they are clever by doing so. If there is enough space to let the bus out, you must do so.

And its all here on DirectGov: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069858

I don't see any 'must' about letting buses pull out, neither do I see any reference to a regulation. Rule 223 is therefore advice only and not law. The only rules that have force of law are those that state 'MUST/MUST NOT' and will include a reference to a law be it an act, statute or other law.
Although failure to comply with the other rules of the Code will not, in itself, cause a person to be prosecuted
It also says if you can give priority safely. Being a bus does not allow you to ignore general road safety although there are bus drivers who believe that they have absolute rights on the road.

What gets me is when buses pull out when you are actually parallel with the bus. They do not even know you are there, and you have to slam on because they do not check their mirrors...

I have lost count the number of times I have overtaken a bus when it is not moving (or indicating to do so), only for it to move out when I am driving past it.

Before ANYONE pulls out, they should check mirrors then signal then move IF CLEAR. That is basic driving, taught to every driver, unless buses are told to ignore this rule and put other peoples lives in danger.

Some bus drivers are good, it is the minority who think they are above all traffic laws (like taxi drivers) that give the others a bad reputation.

Nail on head there,, and it a general problem where car drivers accelerate to stop you pulling out including motorways,, many who sit on your back corner for miles so your grasping at straws as to exactly how far away they are.

And its easy to see a car acelerating,, the nose sudenly comes up in and a puff of smoke out the back.

The other big problem is ignorence to how much space a commercial vehicle needs (not just busses).

Like a roundabout, we need both lanes, swing the front end out to get the back end round the bend, and the same on sweeping bends!
and you still get cars coming up the side to the point where you are both crawling trying not to get smashed up

Braking distance, I hate cars that must get in front of you just before turning off at a junction or motorway exit and they pull in feet in front of you and brake.

Also those that must be in front of you but dont want to go faster,, this is a common problem, they dont want to do 52mph on an A road behind you but happy to do 48 in front???

Similar on motorways,, car overtakes, pulls in front, slows down, you go to overtake,, get half the body past,, stupid car accelerates away,, then does the same thing again 2 mile later

Who do I complain to about these people?

over 8 hours driving a day I recon I get 12 instances at least like this,, so its no wonder I like driving nights.

OH and forgot to mention blind spots, take a look at the size of the mirrors and how much area they are able to see,,, 99.9% will be focused towards the back bodywork leaving about 2 foot behind the driver blind

The problem Knome, is that many of us, and I do include myself, are responsible and understanding drivers, ok? but some of your brethren tar us with the same brush and just use mass of there vehicles as the answer.

Any responsible driver can recognise when to give way, when to thank another motorist, and when a genuine mistake has been made.

No driver is perfect no matter what vehicle he/she drives, even if 25 hr per day. :)

'fraid you are mistaken, the highway code is an advisory piece of literature with points/rules in it that when highlighted are in actual reference to pieces of road traffic law legislation.

Think you may wish to revise your comment!

"Many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison. Such rules are identified by the use of the words ‘MUST/MUST NOT’. In addition, the rule includes an abbreviated reference to the legislation which creates the offence. An explanation of the abbreviations can be found in 'The road user and the law'.

Although failure to comply with the other rules of the Code will not, in itself, cause a person to be prosecuted, The Highway Code may be used in evidence in any court proceedings under the Traffic Acts (see 'The road user and the law') to establish liability. This includes rules which use advisory wording such as ‘should/should not’ or ‘do/do not’."
