Help me please - I want to DO THIS this time and save my sanity

Can anyone tell me?

CCCS - if you go with them and have a DMP does it affect your credit rating?

I dont want any credit again EVER so Im not concerned about that but dont want to do anything that will jeapordise getting a decent deal on a mortgage when our current offer runs out (next year)

I am about 30k in debt, not even sure of total figure, my head is in the sand, my husband doesnt know.

I hate it

hate it

hate it

and hate myself too

all my fault

i have spendaholic tendancies but i have stopped needless spending, cut all my credit cards up 4 months ago but not before i had managed to spend thousands on them

  • Firstly, I can't offer any advice on this, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone; you've just found a new supportive family :)

You've made the first important step, if you can get a statement of account together ('SOA') then that's what's needed. It'll be scary though, but nothing that you won't find a solution for...

...and trust me, topping yourself isn't the way out ;) (and anyway if you did, you'd be in big trouble with us here ! :D )

    Hi there,

Sorry I don't know the answer to your question either, but I'm sure someone will be along soon who does know.

Just wanted to say- you sound like you are carrying a huge burden on guilt and are very angry at yourself. Please remember that yes, while you have overspent and run up debts, that does NOT make you a criminal or a bad person. And you're in good company on this board- lots of us have made the same mistakes as you, we're all human :)

You mentioned your husband doesn't know - I realise it is none of my business, but as you are married and this is something that potentially affects you both, wouldn't it be better if you could build up the courage to share the true situation with your husband? These things have a habit of being found out eventually anyway, and better that it comes from you in the words you prefer to use, than by your husband finding bills etc. Also, it would probably be a big reief to you, might help you to forgive yourself a bit esp if husband is supportive.

You have made big progress and changed your habits already, this is a huge first step so feel proud of yourself.

    Take care,
    sarah x

  • I have just completed the CCCS thing and it produced this statement for me.

It has suggested a DMP of £646 a month but the thing is alot of these things Im paying nothing on (the overdrafts, they are all within their limits) so the DMP would actually be MORE than were paying out now.

However, they said I would be debt free in 3 years 9 months. IMAGINE THAT?????

I thought that I would be in for the long haul and certainly the way I am going would take YEARS to pay off.

Im really not sure what to do

    HM,

I have had a go at making the statement a bit easier to read, hope that is ok - it will make it easier for people to offer advice.

My main comment is, although you say your OH doesn't know - only less than 9k of this debt is yours alone - and he has about £7000 in his name alone - and the rest is joint. So I do not think you are 'worse' than him, you are about the same!

What would you like suggestions on? People here have all kinds of advice about
    - how to make cut backs
    - DMP, IVA or other options
    - telling your partner

What would be most useful to you?

    Hello there

Can I suggest you put in a call to the CCCS and make an appointment to speak with somebody - they will be able to give you the professional advice and help you deal with the creditors.

In terms of your SOA just a couple of points I noticed.

The £300 food budget looks a little high - if you have a good look around the Old Style board here you will see lots of ideas on things like meal planning/storecupboard use ups that will help you cut down on this substantially.

Tobacco - maybe consider stopping to save the £50

Can you do anything to earn extra income?

Have you checked that you have got the cheapest possible telephone/internet packages, insurances, etc. Phone/Internet at £50 looks very high.

Get rid of Sky and this will save you £21 a month - you can switch it to Freesat and get the freeview channels through your sky dish.

In terms of your mortgage renewal if you are currently defaulting on your payments to other creditors I think that this will be shown on your credit report at present - so could affect your chances of getting a new deal - but I'm sure that CCCS will be able to look at all the specifics and give you specialised advice on that.

    Good luck.

Hello there, have been looking through you soa, can you give us the aprs for the above amounts owed, I know it doesnt seem like it now but this really isn't bad, there are so many more things precious than money!, would you not be able to talk about this to your husband? If you have spent he above on you and your family surley he will understand and trust me it feels a hell of alot better when you are both aware of the problem and sharing it.

I am unsure about how credit will be affected on dmps etc but someone will be along to help in no time,

Please dont feel down, i know its easier said than done but there is always another way!

    Big hugs coming your way

  • Hi

Thanks for making it easier to read!

I have had complete control over our finances. We are 25 with 2 kids and the cards in his name and joint names are accounts opened by me. He only has knowledge of a few. He knows we arein debt but not how extreme it is.

I am actually quite angy with him for sailing through leaving m to do [a terrible job of] dealing with our finances.
  • I am not actually behind on any of the credit commitments, so not sure if we will have any default notices. Have had a couple of late payments though.

The Gas and Elec are high as we have recently had to get meters fitted to pay off a debt built up.

The car insurance is for 2 cars. Im hoping this will go down this year now we are 25.
