I have just bought a Car and Insured it yesterday. My Insurance details are on the data base which I have checked but the Policy has not yet been mailed to me. I have been told they will take up to 5 working days getting to me. What I want to know is although I know that I cannot drive the Car yet and have to keep it off the road but can I keep the car parked in my car parking bay in the residents Carpark? At the moment the car is stuck in the dealers site.

The vehicle should either be taxed or SORN.

As you know, if it's not taxed it can't be on a public highway.

You should check any rules (lease?) relating to the use any residents private car parking area; sometimes they require vehicles to be taxed and roadworthy (essentially to avoid vehicles being dumped)

The residents carpark is owned by the Housing Association so the Council has nothing to do with it. Thanks for all your replies. The dealer said that I can leave it there until it's taxed but I want it outside my home but if I have to wait then I will. I can Tax it online but it takes about 5 working days for the Tax disc to arrive but doing it at the PO means I get the Tax disc straight away. It's annoying that the Insurance company doesn't supply a Cover note otherwise I could Tax it tomorrow :( I'm crossing my fingers that the Policy comes through by Friday because I wanted to be able to drive it at the weekend.

How would you intend to get it from the dealers to your residents carparking space without driving it?

The dealer would bring the Car to me but as i'll now wait for the Insurance Policy to come through i'll Tax it and then collect it myself. I just wanted to have it outside my home.

Why not tax it online ? They will allow it

It takes at least 5 working days for the Tax disc to come through so i'd rather do it via the PO.

Recent changes to the VED rules mean that if certain critera are met when you apply for tax online you can use the car for five days without displaying a disc while waiting for it to arrive in the post without commiting an offence.

I believe it's just got to be re taxed before the old one runs out but the DVLA website will explain. Either way, you should be okay.

Also, it's not a road where a vehicle must be taxed, it's defined as 'a road repairable at public expence'. That means that certain roads which are wholly private can be used to keep sorned cars on. Just useful info for readers.

I don't have a fax machine but didn't know that they can fax to the post office. I'll phone them tomorrow and find out, thanks for that.
