Well, despite Custardy's and swingaloo's opposition, I'm not aware of the policy having changed.

Which is that if you write the correct address on an item, and pop it back in the post, it should be redelivered at no extra charge.

And that's the way it has been for as long as I can remember.

And not that you'll care, but I redirect far more letters which aren't for anyone here than I do letters for my sons who are temporarily not here.

Did the item you were charged for have any postage already, or had it been opened?

got a link to that 'policy'?
    and why 'should' it be?

Gosh - I kind of regret asking the question in the first place - I seem to created a lot of bickering :-(

Custardy - I don't expect my mail to be delivered for free - I was just asking what the official policy on this is.

Just for interests sake - the postman quite happily delivered 3 forwarded pieces of mail for my flatmate yesterday - obviously consistency isn't my sorting offices strong point!!!

the problem is RM is far more interested in cutting staff and levels of service than issues like this
as i said RM should charge all unofficially redirected items
    you show a perfect example
3 items that have been (at least)sorted and delivered by RM
    then collected,sorted,transported and delivered again
however dont worry folks, the government are on the case

My parents have done this loads for me and I've never had to pay or had any problems. I believe it's their policy. I expect there is something else wrong with this item e.g. not enough postage for the first delivery.

Think the point here is, mail is redirected when people score through and put a new address on. But really it shouldn't be. Should be returned to sender and then they can send it on to the Customer. That's my opinion anyway. RM have been doing this for years in an unofficial capacity and now people expect it. The first time it changes, and people moan about it.

Any mail that comes through my door not for me gets put back in box with not at this address or deceased on it. Not that I get many because my postie knows who lives here as he's a colleague and does it automatically. It's not my job to redirect mail for previous tenants, and certainly isn't RM's job to redirect mail for free.

People who are saying your should change your address with the company sending the mail, this just isn't practical if you are at uni for the half the year and moving accomodation every year or working away from home for a few weeks at a time.

I kept everything at my mums address, I gave her permission to open anything and once a week she bundled everything relevant up in an envelope and posted it to me. That's not complicated is it?

It's not complicated, but it costs money and this is a money saving site. It's also more hassle for your mum and means your post is delayed by up to a week.

Not changing your permanent address also has legal implications for your driving licence, insurance etc.
