6 month old phone with a fault and orange want £30 off me!

My 6 month old phone (as of yesterday) has developed a battery fault so I popped into an orange shop where I was told that as I was into my second 6 months I would have to pay a £15 'admin fee'.

'Yeah right' I said. I phoned orange up from home and was told that acutally I would need to pay a £30 admin fee to cover couriers etc!

I haven't shouted at them despite these silly charges but I may accidentally explode the next time i speak to one of them. How are they allowed to charge for this????

I'm going to try to contact nokia (the manufacturer) and ask them to repair for free (as it's in its warranty) though I accept i may need to pay a few pounds for special delievery or some such. I've got a nokia service number but it's premium rate and I'm loathed to call it. It's 0906 754 7540 but if anyone has a local rate number for the same people i'd appreciate it.

If I can't find a cheapy number then I'll try popping into my local nokia and see what they say.

I'm so annoyed at orange. I really regret ever choosing them (not just because of this but the whole charge for itemised billing and 35p for orange wednesdays etc plus some tariff issues i have).

Have you got insurance on it? Perhaps your household insurance might cover it?

Go to yell.com and type in nokia - brings up several 'normal' contact numbers

Not sure if this still works, but try 01480 434343 for Nokia customer service.
  • Thanks guys. I'll give them a try - never even occured to me to check yell!! Dur!
  • Go on to nokias website and get the address of your nearest nokia service centre then give them a ring and it will be done under warranty unless they decide you've damaged it yourself
    hope this helps

If it's a fault covered by the warranty then you can take it to a Nokia repair centre who will repair it free of charge. If you have it done through Orange, it is a claim on the warranty part of your Orange Care insurance - this is why they want to charge you an admin fee.
  • Carphone Warehouse are a recognised Nokia service centre but there are also a number of other retailers that offer the service. Try the link below:

As long as the fault hasn't been caused by accidental damage then it will be covered by the warranty.
  • Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you'll find that what Orange told you was correct. Nokia batteries are only warranted for 6 months:

They didn't tell me anything of the sort. They told me they wanted to charge me an admin fee to get my phone fixed under warranty.

It's a battery connection problem so hopefully I have nothing to worry about (connectors are more senstive than battery innards). Thanks for the link though.

PS I don't have phone insurance. I replace my phone every year so rely on warranties (unless I lose them but then I always keep a spare phone around just in case - sims are quite cheap to replace!).

    Thanks all
  • I'm new to contract phones and was surprised you would need to pay anything for a repair.

I took a contract with vodafone and assumed that for the length of the contract the phone belonged to them, thus they would be responsible for repairs...ie I hired from them, didnt own teh equipment.

Can someone clarify for me who actually owns a contract phone?

If I owned the phone could I then put the sim card into any phone?

    I

Surely if your phone disappears for whatever reason the network cancels your existing sim card and give you a new one.
