That pre-supposes that the 20% reduction is not a financial cost cutting exercise, pure and simple.

It could well be in part. The country is massively in debt, things cannot go on the same as it is unaffordable.

How will a medical prove the care needs of people with mental health problems or learning difficulties?

I think the people carrying out the medicals will be aware that all disability issues are not purely physical.

Considering the many millions of unclaimed pounds of DLA from people who should be claiming, but are not, it is unreasonable.

Considering, if everyone that is getting it (minus 0.5 percent fraud) is eligible and meets the criteria, how is it reasonable to pick 20 percent of those people and no longer pay them?

Considering the growth of the internet over the last decade, its not suprising benefit takeup has increased as more people are aware of what they can claim.

edit to add: also, they should just say that they want to reduce the numbers, for cost reasons, not blame a fraud rate that does not exist.

The fraud with DLA is double digit and definitely above 10% ... unofficially ... don't ask me from where are I know it but I know it for sure ...

And just before retiring age with the last possibility to get a car fraud levels are even higher ...

I am not sure what you mean by that comment?

I am sure you know that the only way to get a motability car is to be in receipt of HRM, so by definition, everyone who has a motability car meets the qualifying criteria.

When you consider how very difficult it to get HRM DLA - and then consider that only a small percent of people who do get HRM actually exercise their right to have a motability car (for example, for a more mature driver with a good insurance history it is often a significantly more expensive option), then it seems to me to that in terms of benefit fraud, motability cars are probably a long way down the list.

    Or maybe I have misunderstood?

Edited to add: also do bear in mind that not all disabled people drive their own motability cars, the person who appears to be perfectly healthy and mobile may in fact be the carer/designated driver.

My comment was about people claiming DLA, nothing to do with Motability cars. However, whilst on the subject, I fail to see how this scheme can be an expensive option for anyone.

    £50 a week hrm x 56 = £2,800 a year

many older drivers would be happy with a slightly older car, £200 a year insurance (or less), free tax for being on hrm, £50 MOT, £400 for parts and servicing (worst case)

    = £650 a year

so for some, it might work out far better to get the cash instead of the car
2 esa medicals passed successfully (support group - it can be done!!)!! :j

And where are the depreciation costs?

If it is a slightly older car, let's say 4-5 years old and I drive it for 3 years I will lose probably 1500-2000 pounds in value.

With motability cars you don't have to think about this.

I don't think anyone knows how high the true levels are. After all, the 0.5% is only proven fraud.

I think that anyone who is dealing for years with disabilty benefits knows how high is the benefit fraud, but it is not politically correct to discuss it and to report the true numbers.

Even a slightly older car needs to be bought, either with a loan or out of savings with the loss of interest that means. I also think that 400.00pa for repairs is very optimistic - my 7 year old Fiat cost me two grand last year in repairs!
