Although I don't have a Desire, and know absolutely nothing about Android, I assume that rooting is equivalent of HSPL for WinMo devices... you don't need advanced technical skills really, you just need to be able to follow instructions properly (and read them several times before before doing it) :) The absolute best place for everything WinMo and Android is the XDA-developers forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php plenty of tips, instructions for everything, custom roms, apps and other customisation. The forum was originally for HTC devices but they have now included other manufacturers handsets as well. Stuff from there is free, though there is a donation system in place as a thank you to the people who spend a fair bit of time improving our devices :)

The Desire section is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=594
the xda stuff is good for MORE reading. but as a do it yourself guide for dummies (like me) the link i gave for www.myhtcdesire.com is better as it is to the point guides with no junk and numerous posts like on xda.

ps: i like xda too and read it often, but a lot of it is mindless tinkering for the sake of tinkering. a bit like modding a car for the sake of modding. there is also a lot of useful stuff there too, like the work arounds thread for the desire http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666332 which is a sticky post now, with a few of my rants and posts too on the forum!:p

for those who are not really technically sound , you can simply root your desire by following the steps below

you would also be able to setup Apps2SD( the rooted version) which gives you the control unlike apps2sd in Froyo
[HOWTO] Root Your HTC Desire in One Click!
WARNING! Follow these instructions VERY CAREFULLY to avoid any problems.

Big thanks to the UnrEVOked team for uncovering the new one-click root method!

The process has been updated as of 26/7/10 to add the bit about radios.

    Downloads

    The windows file from unrevoked.com/recovery
Step 1 - Installing a Custom Recovery Image Using UnrEVOked

Run the reflash_package.exe you downloaded and extract the files to a sutable location.
Follow the instructions in the .html file to install the HBOOT driver.
If you have it, uninstall HTC Sync (leave HTC Driver Installer)
    Reboot your PC.
With Desire go to Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type > Disk drive then Untick ‘Ask Me’
Then go to Settings > Applications > Development > Make sure USB Debugging is ticked.
Then go back to Applications and make sure Unknown Sources is ticked.
Start the reflash.exe in Admin mode (Right Click > Run as Admin (Only required for Windows Vista + 7)
If you want to install Amon Ra Recovery (Not needed unless you want to), download it and in UnrEVOked go to File > Custom Recovery and select the recovery image.
    Connect your Desire.
Wait (it should take about 1-2 minutes)
Then, your Desire should be in recovery mode! Hit reboot.
Help! I’m having Driver Issues with Windows! UnrEVOked just stays on ‘Waiting for Device’

Firstly, verify that you have installed the HBOOT drivers correctly. Then, make sure your device is in ‘Disk Drive‘ mode and ‘USB Debugging‘ is on. Also check that you ran UnrEVOked as administrator.

If all else fails, use this guide to install Ubuntu Linux and then follow the Linux UnrEVOked instructions here. It will save you a lot of headaches.

Step 2 – Installing a Custom ROM (Optional but recommended)

Download a ROM from XDA or MoDaCo (I recommend Paul’s MCR r5 with Sense from MoDaCo)
Transfer it to the root of your SD Card (i.e. Not in any folders)
Go to the Android Market and download an app called ‘Titanium Backup‘. Open it and tap the ‘Problems‘ button to install BusyBox.
Then hit Menu Button > Batch > Backup All Apps + System Data Wait for it to finish.
Turn off your phone & turn it back on holding POWER + VOL DOWN then use vol up/down to scroll down to ‘Recovery‘ and power to select.
When you see the recovery screen, use the trackball to scroll to ‘Nandroid‘ and press the trackball to select. Then select ’Backup‘ (You can also use ‘Restore’ to restore)
When it’s done, go back to the main menu and select ‘Wipe Data/Factory Reset‘
Once that has done, go to ‘Flash zip from SD Card‘ and select the ROM you downloaded.
When it’s finished, select ‘Reboot‘ and your phone will reboot into your new rooted custom ROM!
You can repeat this process every time you want to flash a new ROM.
Updating your radio (Only if your ROM Requires it)

If the ROM you want to download requires you to have the new radio image (Such as the new FroYo ROMs) you need to install it.

Download the radio you want to use.
If possible, use an md5sum checker tool to verify the integrity of the file (Check it against what it says where you downloaded it)
Transfer the radio to your SD card.
Boot into recovery (like you did in step 2.4 above)
In the recovery screen, select ‘Flash zip from SD Card‘ then ‘Choose zip from SD Card‘ and select the radio you want to use.
After it’s done, press back to get to the main menu and then select ‘Reboot‘
The radio is now flashing. DO NOT interrupt it. Your phone will reboot twice and the process could take up to 10 minutes.
After it’s done, your phone will reboot automatically into your new radio!
    What Can I Do Now?

    Setup legacy A2SD
