fed up of the no memory alerts because of the apps2internal memory only issue on android.

is it possible to increase the RAM / ROM on a phone like you can easily do in a couple of minutes on laptops?

does it break the warranty if one does it even if it is possible?

are there any shops where one can change the RAM without bricking the phone?

guess the answers might be NO, but asking anyway if it is possible to increase the RAM on my htc desire to 2gb or even 4gb, fed up of the apps2internal memory alerts saying memory full and doesnt look like even froyo android 2.2 will be the savior because of the way they implemented the apps2internal memory at the discretion of app developer in froyo rather than at discretion of downloader like in some roms for rooted phones. if this sh1tty 'apps2internal memory only' problem is not sorted then probably will have to root the phone to get rid of the annoying problem.

any suggestions welcome. yes i know buying another phone is an option :o but i would rather wait till the end of my contract in 15months time.

technically its possible, but way beyond the scope of a home user
the level of soldering required would require access to industrial equipment
I remember when the xbox 1 was current there wre people adding more RAM to the mobo
it wasnt easy and a damn sight bigger than a mobile mobo

well theres always going to people who could do it
I havent been involved in the modding side of things for a few years, but there were guys in the xbox side who had access to pro equipment
havent a clue who you would try locally
maybe ask in a computer repair shop for anyone they use for motherboard trace repairs or the like

apparently a 200mb memory bank is unused on the nexus 1 and can be activated via software.

since the htc desire and nexus 1 are pretty similar and manufactured by htc, i was wondering if this increase in RAM was possible on the desire as well.

The reasoning behind having internal memory on Android is to stop piracy of the Applications. Reasonably I would expect a lot of the free applications to allow installation to the SD Card, or at least some of the larger files (textures or whatever..)

Unfortunately the Desire does not have a huge amount of internal storage space, although the only time I've had the issue is when I had Google Earth installed.

Wouldn't you be better waiting for FroYo? What phone do you have?

    The htc desire.

After reading a bit of how apps2sd is implemented in froyo, it looks like many of us will still face the problem because it leaves the discretion of installation of apps to sd to the Developers and not you. If you want to install big apps like games or other professionals paid apps then you have hardly any memory left. This would not be a problem on the galaxy s etc as that had 2gb ram of which 1.8 is available for apps. On the desire of the 500+ mb of ram / rom after system and htc sense use one gets only about 150 - 190 mb rom left which is why many of us get !!!!ed off seeing low memory alerts most of the day. Of course I can delete apps but the rooted way of apps2sd is better or can have more physical memory. Looks like will have to root even if we get froyo.

I uninstalled google earth and many other useful apps because of this issue.

  • When you say RAM, you're talking about storage, right, rather than RAM? If Froyo won't let you install apps to your removable sd cards, then maybe Gingerbread will? I guess you'll have to wait a while for that though? Or you could get another phone with enough space to install Google Earth... Sounds like you have to compromise a bit on the usefulness of your phone at the moment.

i probably should have said ROM rather than RAM.

storage for other stuff isnt an issue. the issue is the limitation on the way the apps are stored and the problems it causes, if you own an android you will know what i am talking about. i have had to uninstall many apps i wanted just to be able to try out someother new app that i was interested in. who ever thought the 120-190mb limit for apps (on nexus 1 it is slightly more because of lack of htc sense eating up the space like on the htc desire) and the apps2internal memory only was enough is a class 1 idiot at googles android design department. same for htc if they thought 120-190mb was enough when with the same limitations of android, samsung for similar pricing has 1.8gb available for apps. anyway that handset wasnt available when i bought mine. if they implemented apps2sd the cyanogen mod way then there wouldnt be a problem as the limit would be 32gb worth of sdcard memory. looks like if this isnt sorted by the htc version of android then i will probably be rooting the phone to get rid of this annoying problem.
