if you own an android you will know what i am talking about.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. I've owned my Desire for 3 1/2 months, I've downloaded 35 apps and I've got 81MB of internal storage left. I'm not saying it isn't a problem for some people (it obviously is for you) but I suspect it's a limit many users won't come close to experiencing, particularly with FroYo which may not allow every app to be stored to SD, but will allow a significant portion to do so.

On the other hand, I've less than 2.7GB of my 32GB SD card free. Now that's a problem - bring on the 64GB cards ... ;)

  • i probably should have said ROM rather than RAM.

storage for other stuff isnt an issue.
Not ROM either, given that you can read and write to it. Just surprised that your OS imposes a limit on where you store apps vs other stuff (music, video photos etc) Seems a little odd, that was all.

i think the apps to internal memory issue was because of drm concerns i guess.

it is ROM by the way, there has been confusion over this because of the read write issue, but it is ROM, see various android and google forums for detailed discussions on this topic of whether it is RAM or ROM on android. yes i know it is odd but it is a mix of OS version and hardware manufacturer issues combined. froyo 2.2 allows apps2sd but in an app developer controlled way. 2.1 official version doesnt allow it unless rooted and have another apps2sd program.

other non official versions of 2.2 allow the user controlled apps2sd.

just waiting to see what htc version of 2.2 will be before i decide to root or not.

this isnt an issue on handsets like the samsung galaxy s which has 2gb ROM of which 1.8gb is available for apps unlike on the desire which has got about 140mb:eek: but even that will depend on the type of ROM flashed. eg if a network has added a lot of their crap on the ROM factory installed by HTC (eg network branded ones) then the available ROM for apps goes down further .

most apps are small ins ize, some big ones if written well will already have a part on internal memory and a bit on external memory. but not all apps are written that well in real life.

Sorry, but it definitely isn't. You cannot write to ROM (Read Only Memory). The contents of ROM are fixed at manufacture and cannot be altered or added to.

thats because yours is rooted. i am not fully sure if warranty is broken by rooting as htc seems to have repaired under guarantee some rooted custom reflashed handsets as well. once i am sure warranty is not broken by rooting then will probably root one of my handsets.

see various android forums where this issue has been discussed a few times. my info comes from there where quite a few tech guys on almost all the threads were agreeing it is ROM. confused me too as i thought it was RAM but came around later to ROM after seeing all those threads. still not that sure though as instinctively even i think it should be RAM thats why i had said initially RAM on the title of this thread but later changed it after seeing various threads on this issue.

  • I would be very interested to read what you all think of rooting the htc desire (especially for those of us who don't have advanced technical skills).

I have had my desire for 3 months or so on Vodafone. Only downloaded 4 apps so far and my internal memory is down at 115mb.

So it would be really useful to be able to save to my SD card.

internal memory starts at around 140mb on your htc desire depending on the rom you have, different networks will have different roms after the crap they add to htc sense plus android, so memory left will vary! so 115mb is not less, it is GREAT for a desire!!!! you can load enough till 15mb is left when you will start getting low memory alerts! but even if you get low memory alerts the device is not sluggish due to the way android differs from windows. it should work fine even if you have 1-2 mb left! (or so i gathered). i have about 100 apps, amount keeps varying as i keep deleting and adding new apps almost every day, trying out new apps! i have never had more than 15-20mb left ever since i got the desire as within an hour of getting my desire i had filled it to the brim with apps and started getting memory alerts! just now i have 12.88mb left in internal memory and have about 107 apps on the phone. obviously if some apps are huge then the number will be smaller.

froyo 2.2 should increase your ability to add apps by ten times approx, as most of the data will be on sd card and a bit on the internal memory, but this will be decided by the app developer, thats how the official froyo is designed. how ever if you root and modify then can have other apps that allow you to download directly everything to sd card.

see link as a starting point for guides to root. using unrevoked3 apparaently you can root in 10mins without knowing much geek stuff. see easy do it yourself guide on the link http://myhtcdesire.com/ . the link is good for loads of stuff on using the desire better. i have not rooted, but might do it if i get fed up of the memory alerts soon or dont get froyo if htc doesnt pull their finger out of their backside soon on this count! this apps2internalmemory problem does my head in sometimes :p

Although I don't have a Desire, and know absolutely nothing about Android, I assume that rooting is equivalent of HSPL for WinMo devices... you don't need advanced technical skills really, you just need to be able to follow instructions properly (and read them several times before before doing it) :) The absolute best place for everything WinMo and Android is the XDA-developers forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php plenty of tips, instructions for everything, custom roms, apps and other customisation. The forum was originally for HTC devices but they have now included other manufacturers handsets as well. Stuff from there is free, though there is a donation system in place as a thank you to the people who spend a fair bit of time improving our devices :)

The Desire section is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=594
