September 30th is the cut off date for claiming a bumper. Stands to reason that by then a design change will have been made and well into the system.

CNN aren't really saying there's going to be a recall though, are they?

Bit of a misleading title. All they've said is:

"There's a chance the phone could still be recalled after September 30"

Yeah, and there's also a chance that it won't.

If I was an iPhone owner I would be straight down to the shops to return my phone and cancel my contract...

Its obvious that Apple will release a (hardware) fixed phone soon so anyone with the non-fixed version is going to be stuck using a "bumper" or case for the rest of their contract. Some might be fine with that but think about when you come to sell it in 18 / 24 months... imagine on ebay - who will want a "faulty" version when they could have the fixed version....

Apple tend to be very good over replacements, they might kick up a bit of a fuss but eventually give in.

Failing that go the SOGA route, there are reams of evidence of the issue on the net, if they push out a hardware fix there will be reams of evidence to confirm that too. I wouldn't fancy Apples chances in a small claims court.

I've upgraded from a 3g to iphone 4 and want to get a refund. I only made 4 calls today but I dropped at least 2 of these which happens every day and is a problem I never had with the 3g. A few days ago I tried to make an urgent call but couldn't get a signal for half an hour in an area which is normally fine.

I don't want to be stuck with this for 2 years and would rather go back to my old 3g as at least it was reliable.

I hope I can get a refund and cancel my contract. I'll be calling CPW on Monday.

After the Steve Jobs presentation there was a Q&A and the cancellation of contracts came up...

Q: Refunds for AT&T contracts too?
    A: Steve: I believe so.

Obviously this is just the US but I can't see them not doing it worldwide. Personally I haven't yet experienced any dropped calls and neither have any iPhone4 using friends. It must depend on how it's held and the signal strength of the area you are in. I don't know anyone who uses a case either. Still, if they are giving them away I'll take advantage of the offer!

Apple with fix the IPhone problem, but I do not see it been in this model. If your after a new working IPhone. I would return the current IPhone 4G, and then wait for the new version with the fault fixed.
I do not believe it will be easily fixed on existing IPhone4G phones, probably need to wait for a 4GS.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

I had the same problem with the Nokia N97 when it came out. Although in my case it was due to being left handed and covering the antenna. But I could hardly get a signal when I held the phone.

There was stacks of posts about it on the Nokia forums at the time. Something to do with the SARs thing. But it really effected left handers in medium signal areas. Ironically the Nokia 5800 lights up like a Xmas tree in the weakest signal areas ?
