I've been MS-ing since Feb this year, and having registered as self-employed, HMRC have now asked me to complete a tax return for 09/10.
I'm employed full-time and pay tax on my normal earnings at normal rates through HMRC (20% on everything over £6470). So I expected my tax return to calculate that in addition, I need to manually pay 20% of what I've earned through MS in those 3 months - only about £10!
However it seems to have got confused when I added my savings interest to my income in the online return, as it's now calculating they owe me £50! Tax was deducted from my savings interest before I received it.
I then thought perhaps I need to include what I've earnt through my normal employment, and now it's telling me I owe £6000-odd in tax - I've already paid tax on my 'normal' earnings! But maybe they will see this, and will send me a bill for the difference or something?
PLEASE can someone clarify what I need to declare on the tax return - whether I should tell them my income from normal employment or whether this is handled separately? And if so how do I deal with this big figure which they say I owe but have mostly already paid through PAYE?
I thought tax wasn't meant to be taxing! I just want to be legal with my tiny little extra income but it's driving me nuts!
Thanks in advance...0 -

It's quite simple.
Main section - include your income from savings and the tax deducted
Self employment section - MS income, -allowable costs and profit (or loss)
Employment section - PAYE income and the tax deducted
After filling that lot in it will calculate it right. Sounds like you've added your PAYE income to your MS income on the self employed section.
If you're doing it online it's really easy, if you're doing it on paper you need the main section, one set of self employment supplementary pages and one set of employment supplementary pages.
Hope this helps0 -

Mine are the same number but a different region and it doesn't mention photographs!
Think they're taking the mickey if they want three exterior shots as well as the normal scenario for 10% less fee!!0 -
Talking of ACCA, there used to be an accountant on here that used to post quite regularly, TIMNE, I think he was. Not seen him post for ages. Is he still about?0

Have a read through the detailed notes, if it's a women and childrens you'll only have to try stuff on in the womens dept then make two enquiries in the childrens.
If it's childrens only then it's just the enquiries normally never seen it require you to try anything on0 -
