House here is full to overflowing with Ubuntu PCs, most are other peoples cast offs, but with a bit of extra RAM they work ok with Ubuntu. They get donated to worthy causes when occasions arise.0

As I type this using a laptop with Vista :rotfl:, I have another at home which runs Linux Mint. Linux is good, but not quite there yet for more basic home users, and too many things I need really need Windows which makes it simpler just to pull out this laptop and leave the Mint one for other uses.
Still highly impressive for free OS!0 -
I don't just use it because it is free, although it helps, it is because it is easy to keep secure, and most of all, it is not secret code - I can find out what it is *really* doing with my information. The aspect of free as in 'freedom' is, for me, an advert for a credit card says - 'Priceless'0

i use ubuntu most of the time and just boot into windows when i want a bit of a gaming session once they eventually get steam on Ubuntu i really cant see me booting into windows at allDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
I have Ubuntu 10.04 on the desktop at home and find it runs smoothly without problems that seemed to arise with windows.0

I'm currently running Vista Home Premium. A couple of years ago I was on XP. I kept getting annoyed with Windows and blasted spyware/malware and viruses, no matter how much security I put on the machine.
So I tried Ubuntu, but I couldn't get half the hardware to work on it due to incompatibilities, that sort of thing, so after a couple of months, I switched back to Windows.
After a year I headed back too linux due to know the hardware incompatibilities were now over, but just before installing Ubuntu again, my computer fried.
Having to replace most of my computer, I couldn't switch back to Linux due to new incompatibilities.
I keep checking back once a month to see if the incompatibilities are now done with, so that I can dual boot Windows and Linux.
I'll use Linux for work, switching too Windows for gaming.
p.s. when I eventually make it to University, I wouldn't mind getting a Macbook.
p.p.s. I'm no fanboy of Microsoft, Linus or Apple. I just use what suits my needs.0 -
@ aurongrande What incompatabilites are you having with your machine in Linux...
Most can be solved with a little bit of work...Laters

I know there tends to be work arounds for the incompatibilities, but some of the work arounds don't stay in place, forcing you to redo the work around each time you load the machine.
basically the main hardware is my sound, graphics, network (that was solved by getting a compatible adapter) and the motherboard chipsets.
the Hardware is as follows;
Radeon HD 5670
Creative Audigy SE with 5.1 surround
can't remember the motherboard, but I know that it's now fully compatible, so doesn't need mentioning.
It's down to the sound and graphics. I can only usually get 2 speakers to work at 8bits instead of 24, which makes sound seem rather flat. As for the graphics card, it's a recent one, so the drivers are still being worked on. The card was only released earlier this year.
Even though some websites including AMDs says that their are drivers for the card, there are still many people reporting problems with the card in various distros, including Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse etc.0 -
Morning fellow MSE forumers,
I have been running Ubuntu 10.4 on my computer for the best part of a year, but picked up one of those computer magazines at the local market last week which had a disc with Linux Mint 7 on it.Does anyone else on here use it and is it a big improvement on Ubuntu 10.4?
Thank you for your time.0
