Who at MSE is a Linux user? I've been running Arch Linux as my primary system and on my laptop for the past two years

Linux is an alternative operating system to Windows. You can see the following sites for info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux
http://www.distrowatch.com
http://www.ubuntu.com

In addition to being better (IMO) than Windows most distributions are also completely free. They include an entire office suite that is comparable to Office so you can save quite a bit

  • I'm a pretty competent Unix/Linux user as I had to work in that environment at my old workplace in telecomms over the past 12 years, but the only thing I struggle with is the general installation of it on my home PC which I always found troublesome and sometimes quirky.

I did manage to get Suse working on my old PC and YDL on my Playstation 3 but after many different crappy installation disks later I managed to find out about running a bootable Linux OS which I now have installed on a thumb drive (like a Live CD) - can't remember the flavour of Linux now though but it works fine.

    Why ?

    - meaning why? are you asking. Do you have a problem with your Linux and are looking for advice from other users, or are you just a phanboy using these boards to promote Linux as an O/S ? There are dozens or many dozens of regular, competant long time Linux users in here

    Part time Linux user now.

Although saying that, I used to use it as a full time OS for over 8 years!

Started out on Fedora and went until Ubuntu Karmic Koala came out and jumped onto the Ubuntu bandwagon.

However, apart from running Ubuntu on my home server.. I'm now an avid OSX fan (which is essentially a *nix OS).

Also use Red hat at work :o
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

I was curious how many other users there were here. Certainly no worse than any of the other group topics :)

Stax my friend, they will come out and find you, and they are really nice people As for group topics this group exists to help others with their techie issues and is generally not used as a social / pub group for purely social interaction.

All the topics here as you would have noticed if you checked, are all requesting one kind of help or another, so my opinion only - others may differ, but your quote of " no worse than any of the other group topics " is substantially incorrect. Your topic and reason for posting is 100% adverse to the ' group topics '. and was my reason for using the phrase phanbhoy in #3

    Hope this helps

I've used Ubuntu for a few years now and can't believe how much time in the past I wasted on swatting damn malware on Windows, as I only ever surfed/emailed on both. Apologies to all Windows/gamers etc who have different requirements.

Ubuntu and Debian on various remote machines, VPS and dedicated. All windows at home though. They both have their place, but this thread will descend into fanboyism no doubt.
