So jimmy~no~friends posts a sad-sac question here to try to find a new friend in a new area where no one knows him, but does so in the same old boring evangelical way and guess what happens.
I use Linux every hour of every day and as ' weegie.geek ' says they have their place, in fact Linux is priceless I would be lost without it. Linux Fly's [ like Mac users ] trawl the interweb in droves looking for a thread where they can slither under the radar to preach, and convert others, but all fly's attract others.
In this case he gerrymanders a thread in a group which caters for people who are ' self confessed ' non-computer-literate on Windows.
I make no apology to the group for my response, if you can't make a PnP windows work for you and your kids, you won't be able to use Linux.

As PCs and laptops have become more powerful, I can't really understand why virtualisation hasn't become a more mainstream item.
Admittedly for my job, I mostly use debian or ubuntu on the desktop, but there is always a windows session running in a virtual machine.
You tend to become platform agnostic then. I use whatever feels right at the time. The ability to pick up the Virtual Machine and move it to another machine is also useful.
I've no problem with people who prefer Windows or Mac OSX, but we have all come across the type of person who will slag off Linux/Windows/OSX mainly on the basis of what they have heard from others / read online. This reflects a closed mind in my view. Much better to have an open mind and embrace and try new ideas.0 -

I have a couple of Windows VMs set up to use if need be on this laptop. Very easy to do nowadays.
They are often used though.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Ubuntu and Xubuntu here.
Windows started getting more complicated about the same time as Linux started getting easier, I think they're about even now.
A friend is getting trained up on using a PC For Beginners, on xubuntu, and complained that the computers in the library were difficult. They're Windows.

As kabayiri says, open-mindedness is the thing. Its a matter of horse for courses. If you want a machine that has "all the latest software", allows you to do what you want, don't want to involve yourself in what goes on under the bonnet and have relatively deep pockets then MS is probably the way to go, with a smattering of OS X. If however you either can't afford to constantly upgrade hardware/software or are less concerned with brand involvement then there are now perfectly viable open-source alternatives.
We're very much in the latter category. 5 machines in the house; 1 desktop (G4 MDD) and 1 Mac Air (both 2nd hand) running Snow Leopard; 2 home-build desktops and a Dell lappie running Linux (2 x Lucid, 1 x SuSe).My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

Running Slackware - have been for years. Love it. Occasionally dig in with Ubuntu/Debian/Cent.
I still keep an XP box around for 'those' apps I need once in a million years (Flash, SoundForge, SAW+,Vegas) but it's just so slow and flaky compared to Linux :-)0
