I think that you will need to buy a new card from sky for £20 (i think)

It will need a software update and a card in order to get a few extra free channels, most of them you can get without a card.

No, Sky will not know, or care.

    WF100 is correct.;)

When you remove the card the box can't then decrypt the FTA channels.

Wrong, FTA do not require a card, FTV do.

If you simply stopped subscribing to Sky, you have to pay the £20 (or if you're in Spain and need a card for the first time, yes).
If you were on the freesatfromsky package, and your card has become out of date, or has stopped working, they have to send you one for free. The whole point was that you made 1 upfront payment and NO MORE!
Romeospadre, if you've already got a quad LNB you don't need to replace it, it will work for Freesat if it works for Sky.

Sorry to show my ignorance, but I don't know what all these LNB etc mean.
    Could some one please explain.

LNB=Low Noise Block. It's the 'arm' bit facing the dish that focuses the signal, the cable feeds from the LNB then carrry the signal to the digibox. A quad LNB has 4 feeds. For Sky+/PVR functionality you need a minimum of 2 feeds.
So a quad or dual LNB will not require any upgrading to use for a Freesat box with PVR functions.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
