When you remove the card the box can't then decrypt the FTA channels.

And when you put it back in it still can't I assume?

Not if it's no longer paired with the box.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I have an old box used infrequently in the spare room and the card came out of it many moons ago.

Wrong I'm afraid, a FreesatfromSky Card does not need to be paired with a given receiver, they will work in any Sky receiver, and continue to work as long as they are kept alive in any Sky receiver.

Yep, as long as the card is active, it can decrypt the Free to Air channels, Ch5 included. A dead card or no card only gets the Free To View, unencrypted channels like BBC1 etc. When you cancel your Sky sub, your card should be left active, and you should still be able to view the FTV channels, you should NOT need another card at £20 for this!

When I cancelled my subscription years ago, I was advised that I needed a new viewing card. However, I continued to use my old card on the old equipment. I was just missing a few channels - like Sky 1. But I'm told you still get more than Freeview.
However a few months back Sky requested that we purchase a £20 viewing card and I did.
The Sky website will tell you what channels you will get.
The best advice I got on changing was from the Sky Freesat Department. Listen to them and not the Subscription Department. It's like dealing with two different companies. The subscription lot tried to tell me the signal wouldn't be as good. What utter rubbish. If they try that one, just ask them how that works - seeing as you are using the same equipment tuned to the same satellite!

How do I contact the Sky freesat department please?

How and why did they request this of you as you were no longer a customer of theirs?

freesatfromsky contact details on this page

    http://www.sky.com/shop/freesat/home/

Note that the above has nothing to do with Freesat

  • Sky Viewing Card is now £25.00.

I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?
All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £25. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.
