We have an old box connected to the Sky disc upstairs (cancelled multiroom)

It has all the BBC1-4 channels, ITV1-4, Channel 4 and Five channels, BBC and Sky News, a couple of music channels, and shopping. Sky+ won't record either. It's worth every penny of the 0p monthly sub :)

If you cancel your subscription it does not turn your box into the equivalent of a freesatfromsky box.

Yes it does. That is exactly what I did when I first cancelled Sky

Although I now have the Humax Foxsat HD PVR recorder, which was expensive but in my view worth the money for the quality of picture and the ability to watch and record in HD

    Er - no it doesn't

freesatfromsky line up includes channels like Fiver.

This is not available if you simply cancel your Sky subscription (as already pointed out by macman in an earlier post)

I still have too many channels, even without Fiver (whatever that is...)

Drifting a bit off topic, I tried an subscription old blue card in my Sky receiver the other day, and lo and behold, it opened up ITV and Channel 5, much to my surprise, however I tried another similar expired blue card and it didn't open anything.

    Weird company Sky..:)

Yes, and the default ITV which I believe is Central, had changed to Anglia, which was the designated ITV aligned to the card.

Lucylucky - you're being fed bad info from Sky, or maybe there's just a bit of confusion, and this causes a lot of people to waste £20 on a card they don't need.
When you cancel, your card should have your subscription removed, but it should still have Ch5 etc and all the other FREE and ENCRYPTED channels. Take the card out (or use a dead card) and you will lose the FREE ENCYPTED channels but retain the FREE UNENCRYPTED channels.
If you cancel Sky and they do it properly, you SHOULD be left with freesatfromsky. If you're not, phone and complain and DO NOT pay them £20!

    Thank you - interesting.

What does the taking the card out do then that lets it know the difference between FTA and FTV?

When you remove the card the box can't then decrypt the FTA channels.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
