It's STILL tough and not getting better - so how are we coping?

Annie, I know what you mean about being on JSA and the harder things to come. I got a letter yesterday saying that they will only be paying £28.99 per week towards the mortgage interest come Oct 1st. Dunno where I'm to find the £20 a week difference from!! That's much less than they'd pay in rent if I was to lose the house and had to rent!!
I desperately want/need to get a job, but noone is interested it seems. I have an interview for Primark tomorrow, they are opening a new store near me so I hope I'm in with a real chance as they need so many people, but I have a degree and this seems to put shops off. You hear stories of immigrants from Eastern Europe with Masters and degrees working in a shop/ doing menial work - so why won't they take us home grown degree toting want-to-be-employees?? It's so frustrating.
Love your attitude re ExOH's woolies:rotfl:

I used to love Warburtons ones, they were the only ones nice enough to have with just salt & butter. However, they have added something to them over the last year or so that disagrees with me, it makes me bloat up and get painful stomach cramps. I am fine with wheat & fine with yeast, so it must be something they use in the baking process. Want to try making my own with no nasties in it!
I also want to try making my own poppadoms & see if those can be cooked in the microwave as well as shop-bought ones (microwaved poppadoms were a wonderful discovery, no need for oil for cooking them - but the raw ones cost almost as much as the pre-cooked ones in our local Tesco & I've never really rated Pattaks which is all they do). Must find an Indian food supplies shop that sells Gram flour, etc!
So many recipes, so little time, especially as little one kept me up until 2:30am in the end last night!
Try saving tuna cans and cutting the bottom off as well as the top. Might be a bit small but would save buyingIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Thanks, I'd read that suggested but... I have very expensive, non-stick iron frying pans that were wedding presents & although you can use metal implements in them, there is a difference between a metal implement and a sharp tin can! It would be false economy to risk ruining an expensive pan to save a few quid.
I might follow a suggestion I saw online of using smooth-sided cookie cutters. I will take a look in Poundland and Wilkinson and see if either of them have something suitable.0 -
Gailey - when I was pregnant I was fortunate enough to not suffer over-much from morning sickness but, the thing that really helped me through those early months was the Belvoir organic ginger cordial (you can get it in Waitrose) - got to be the organic one as the non-organic isn't really that strong. It's pricey, I think it is about £3 a bottle but - you only need about 2mm in the bottom of a pint glass full, in fact, if you made it too strong you'd be coughing! If you like ginger then that is an excellent way of helping with sickness. There were a few days where I was mainlining it at work to ward off queasiness!0

well I am here and am chilling out now hoping that no pain kicks in after my tooth extraction today - don't know what I was worrying about mind as I felt fine afterwards and am still feeling ok today - although brushed teeth this morning and have managed half a cup of luke warm tea and a mouthful of pepsi. so think I will put off the tooth brushing tonight so I don't reopen it and then will gently brush teeth tomorrow and start the salt rinses. So far have only taken a precaution of 2 paracetamol but not through pain more 'just in case' but as I begrudge taking pills I think they are working really well - not taken any pain killers (bar having babe) in about 4 years. fingers crossed I'll be alright
Am planning to go for a walk into town tomorrow. Then I'll get a Tesco shop/Iceland shop done tomorrow with the money I have left over which is about £25.
Bloody NTL bill - have had to use the phone a fair bit for swapping tax credit information, setting up new bills, sorting bank accounts etc so bloody bill is bigger than normal this month. not amused.Time to find me again0 -
Sammy do you not have one of their inclusive packages, I am no longer with them, but I think I paid something like £15 oer month on top of my line rental to include all landlines, and they also do an evening/weekend only package. Then you can use www.saynoto0870.com to find the landline numbers for whoever you are ringing by putting the 0845 or whatever number it is, in. Annie56 - you could go to the local college and get your hair done there. They're always looking for models, they are usually very well supervised and only charge a small fee. get oon line and check.
Gailey - buy some ginger root grate off a small amount add boiling water and sip. The ginger root can be frozen and grated while frozen it might help and if it does'nt ginger root is lovely in all sorts of dishes.
and not overly expensive.

I will get my caravan0 -
In the interests of researching maryb's suggestion, I just took a look at some tuna cans we have in our cupboard. The edge around the base is thicker than at the top, about 2.5mm, so I don't know if our tin-opener would work on them.
I don't eat Tuna and have lots of other food that I need DH to use up (lots of lentil soup/stew & two eggs that went out of date yesterday - lucky him!)
If I don't find anything suitable in town for an acceptable price then I might ask him to eat some tuna over the weekend (he's very obliging!) so that I can test if the can will open at the bottom without creating scarily sharp edges that might cut me or scratch the pan.
Cheers Ginnyknit - I know I could get lots of the stuff I want at an Indian store but haven't seen any in town. I used to pick bits & bobs up when visiting friends in London but haven't been to London much lately due to the baby. I might do some Googling and see if I can find a suitable store nearby.0
