It's STILL tough and not getting better - so how are we coping?

Gailey...its a little early yet to buy big bags of potatoes...in Ireland we are still using early potatoes and they won't really be cheaper until main crop is harvested...I know that your harvest is earlier than ours but would still wait a while so that they will keep better for you.
Princess kate....jealous of your price for bread flour....I pay €2.55 for 2kg for strong bread flour...don't find the bread as nice if I use Lidl or Aldi plain flour and they don't do strong here.

Princess kate I noticed the other day the tins of yeast are cheaper- think its almost half the price if I remember righlty.
northwest 1965, Im about 2 minutes from the Stockport border and its bl**dy raining here too. Ive got washing everywhere but Im not putting the heating on  Made cakes and a chciken and a pork joint so kitchen was warm, now Ive got the door open to dry the house out but its getting chilly!
I have lots of Asian supermarkets not far away, I think I will have a visit. I saw a sign in the window last time I passed and noticed how cheap the Basmati rice was and bogoff to boot! Its been a while since I went in.Clearing the junk to travel light

That's one of the things I miss about living in Stoke, all the Asian shops. There are none around here, unless I travel into Cardiff.0

I have been buying basic ingredients from ours for the last few years and I am amazed at how much cheaper it is especially at this time of year. At the end of Ramadan there will be other baking ingredients such as dried fruit and nuts as well as dried beans etc on special offer so I am going in again then. I go in weekly for milk and sometimes eggs because they are always cheaper0

There are no Asian shops where I am, which is a pity, because it is difficult to get gram flour here, and when you can, it is expensive.
To change the subject entirely. I have something that may be useful to y'all. I have found a way of dealing with these nuisances who ring you up and want your grant to install another 2 metres thickness of loft insulation and cavity wall insultation or whatever. You tell them your number is registered with the Telephone Preference Service, and they reply that it doesn't apply to them. I don't know whether that is true or not. Often they are rude.
I tried this when they rang today, and it got rid of them nicely. Here is what you do:
1. Put on your poshest voice. (I don't need to. I've already got one.)
2. When they bring up the subject of loft insulation. Tell them: "Can't be done, I'm afraid. We can't have a loft, as such. It would obscure the 15th century carvings attached to the roof beams."
3. If they broach the subject of cavity wall insulation, tell them: "I'd love to insulate the walls. This place is dashed difficult to keep warm in the winter. But they won't let us drill holes in the walls. This house is listed as an historic building, you see. We're restricted in what we can do."
They should hang up before you start giving them chapter and verse about the house..."It was built for John Tiptoft, the Lord High Constable of England during the reign of Edward IV, you know...hello?...hello?"0 -
