I don't live far from Greenwood & Gypsy wood. If you go to greenwood you can spend the day there, but after ahn hour in Gypsy Wood you're ready to leave. Glasfryn (as mentioned) is great. They have bowling, soft play for the younger kids & go-karting. There's also a go-karting place in Caernarfon (red line I think its called). Castles are good. Nice views from the Caernarfon one, Beaumaris Jail is fab - very interesting & a bit spooky too! If you're coming to the area I'd recommend the train up snowdon...go on live a little. Betws y Coed is nice & so is Beddgelert.....nice cafe's for lunch.

Re places to eat I use Caernarfon. They have an Indian, italian, thai, cantonese restaurant, the Castle Inn on the square is lovely, the Black Boy (historical pub) served lovely pub lunches. You also have McDonalds & KFC. There's also a nice place in Dinas Dinlle beach (near Caernarfon Airport) called Bwyty Lleu - very new & very very nice indeed!

What ages are the kids if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you for your replies. Is there anywhere that I can eat using my tesco vouchers? I have booked to go to Portmerion and then I think I will also go to the beach on one day and then leave the next day for a spur of the moment decision.

I dont have any children unless you count myself :)

Is there any nice pubs where I can eat in Porthmadog?

    Thanks

The railway up Snowdon is worth it for the views alone. Portmeiron is very different. I would suggest the slate mine in Llanberis which is very interesting and free!

LAst time we went to portmerion we were given a free day return on our tickets. we spent the first day enjoying the village slowly and on the second day we explored the grounds and gardens in the morning and then spent the afternoon on the beach with a picnic - the beach there is amazing.
If you like good food then head toward dolgellau and look for this place - looks like a bungalow on your right:

The White Barn - Mo's Kitchen (Tan-y-Bwlch) Situated on A487, serving traditional Welsh and European dishes between Tuesday and Saturday. Sunday lunches from Noon. Best to book in advance (01766 590 391).

We thought it looked nice and booked our last meal of the holiday there - WOW! - the roasts are to die for and my kids still dream of their sundaes. Expensive at around £95 for 4 of us but worth every penny and I would go as far as saying the best meal we have ever had out. Privately run by a husband and wife they were unbelievably friendly and the whole atmosphere was wonderful.

Sorry I assumed you had childen seeing you mentioned Gypsywood!! Its a place for kids really...very boring for just adults!!

I'd also go for the slate mine in Blaenau Ffestiniog, you can take the Welsh highland Railway from Caernarfon up to Rhyd Ddu...very scenic route.

May I just add that the Slate mine mentioned by Torry Quine is the one in llanberis........the Blaenau Ffestiniog one charges...still nice though.
  • Caernarfon castle really is a joy. You could spend the whole day there.
Yes you do get the free return visit to portmerion so could do the beach and wooded walks on the second day. The train is ok and the view IS stunning but it is very expersive. Do they still do the early morning one for a reduced price. It used to be something like £15 early morning.

We went to Porthmadog a few weeks ago and had a lovely time. Black Rock Sands in Porthmadog is lovely. It's nice having an early evening stroll on the beach too. I would also second Llanberis. We didn't go on the Snowdon railway there as I am very scared of heights but we walked around the slate mines area and walked up to the old hospital and the views are beautiful. Beddgelert also looked lovely but didn't actually stop there ourselves.
In regards to eating places in Porthmadog, there is a hotel just after the tesco and train station on the way out to Tremadog. I think it's called the Queens hotel and the food there was lovely. The fish and chip shop on the right hand side as you drive into tremadog from Porthmadog was also very good.
    Hope that helps.

WOW thank you everyone for your replies. I leave tomorrow to go to Porthmadog and I think the first thing we will do is go to Black rock sands and maybe get some fish and chips or something. Tuesday is Portmerion I think and maybe Wednesday we might go to Snowdonia. Someone mentioned an old hospital is this abandoned or has it been turned into something else?

    Thanks again x

We have just returned from a camping trip. I highly reccomend the Welsh Highland Railway. It cost us £56 for 2 adults & 2 children but it's a 2 1/2 hour train ride with a 2 hour stay at Caernarfon. You can get on at Pont Croesor or Beddgelert http://www.welshhighlandrailway.net/ Much nicer than Ffestiniog.

I also found a 20% off voucher for Portmerion via Google.

The Victoria Inn at LLandbedr has nice home cooked food.
You could have a nice drive through the hills up the Cwm Nantcol road in Llandedr, takes you to the bottom of the Roman Steps
A day out at Shell Island (£5 a day but need to check the tide times)
Sygun Copper Mine is very interesting, as is the Llechwyndd Slate cavern with old fashioned sweet shop

    Hi monkeygirl31

Could you give a bit more info about Sygun please as the tripadvisor reports are very varied. How long were you in there?
