£300 to replace laptop motherboard..

Erm, your photos are not stored on the motherboard, on the hard drive to be honest and that can be reused on any PC, that's easy to do, but a PB laptop that's where you went wrong. Just use your latest backup to restore your photos, Shirley.0

I guess you are one of those who don't listen to the warnings before purchase....
Let me think...who sells Packard-Bell.....
So, what are the symptoms?0 -
It was a gift, so I didn't "choose " a PB,and I certainly wouldn't again!!So my piccies are still there, and I assume letters etc...so I just need someone to remove the hard drive and take them off ,yes??Debt-free...and staying that way...0

Yes, you could even buy a HDD enclosure & use it as a backup drive0

Take the hard drive out of the laptop, and either connect it to another machine as a slave drive or put it in a USB caddy and use it as an external drive.schoolrunmum wrote: »Yes but the machine won't switch on to get them off onto a memory stick..
Whatever was on that drive before the motherboard failed will still be there.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
I take it it's PC World/DSGi who are claiming the motherboard is faulty. That's their answer for everything, they are notorious for lying and saying the motherboard needs replacing whenever a laptop is brought in for repairs - that way they can charge the most money.
It might be worthwhile taking the laptop to your nearest independent computer repair shop for a second opinion. Failing that you can still get the photos off the hard drive using a USB hard drive caddy as explained above. You can buy a caddy for as little as £4.50. It's really not hard to do, just undo the screws on the bottom of the laptop, take out the hard drive, slot it into the caddy and connect it to your computer with the USB cable.poppy100 -
schoolrunmum - long time no see
before you buy a caddy, TAKE THE HDD OUT OF YOUR EXISTING PB LAPPY AND CHECK WHAT KIND IT IS. iF THE CONNECTOR HAS 2 ROWS OF AROUND 20 PINS, YOU NEED A IDE CADDY. IF IT'S TWO SMALL CONNECTORS, YOU NEED A SATA CADDY.
As was said above, a fiver for a caddy, slip your old hdd into it, and connect it via USB to the new lappy - presto !! all your pics etc are accessable
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Forget that, if the laptop is only two years old it's definitely a SATA drive.before you buy a caddy, TAKE THE HDD OUT OF YOUR EXISTING PB LAPPY AND CHECK WHAT KIND IT IS. iF THE CONNECTOR HAS 2 ROWS OF AROUND 20 PINS, YOU NEED A IDE CADDY. IF IT'S TWO SMALL CONNECTORS, YOU NEED A SATA CADDY.poppy100 -

Symptoms? Is there no response/lights at all? Have you tried removing and replacing the battery?0
