    Very nice.:o I assume

£200 is well over the going rate for a hd swap and reinstall. The machine was either in warranty, or just out, so the OP could have used the warranty or SOGA to get a free repair, or could have come here for advice and done it themselves.

Very nice. I assume it fits itself in the machine and installs the OS and all the applications too? If not, the cost of the hard drive isn't the only cost if the OP is paying someone to change it.

Would you be installing the OS manually inputting millions of lines of code??

Or just bung a disk in, click a few boxes and walk off and get on with something more productive like the rest of us??

£200 to change a hard drive is outrageous.

All they said was, something was shorting out on the MB...

Did you spill some liquid on to the computer? "Something shorting" doesn't sound like a diagnosis to me. He either knows what it is or doesn't.

  • The PCWorld syndrome, if you don't know, never looked, can't be arrased to find out - tell the punter it's a £400 motherboard replacement. The punter will either go away or pay more than the value of a brand new replacement item.

Either way the shop is on a big margin winner !

    - hard drive swap out = 5 minutes plus the cost of the drive & [ CHR15 ] straight clone old to new drive = 10 automated minutes - 15 minutes total
    - " shorting out on the MB " not unless a very heavy person sat or fell on it. PC [ turrets ] maybe / lappie its possible but I never heard of it other than
    - other than the power block coming loose in the lappie which is easily diagnosed and almost always solderable

The bottom line is the advice given and prices charged leave a lot to be desired, there is no wonder the industry is seen as a ripoff. Its a shame, I know many good people who have made and continue to make a living over a very large number of years who are really honourable and have never needed to resort to such tactics.

It is no longer a voodoo industry with high demand where only the few knew how to do it. A 10 year old kid could be taught to do it in a couple of weeks. Two of the kids I taught years ago opened up in the same town as my competitors as soon as they were in their 20's, I did not mind, the prices VIP charge unless you can combine to place volume orders mean we all benefit. Anyone who feels they need to rip off punters to keep their income stream should be looking for a~n~other vocation.

True but I assumed the hard drive was being swapped as it was goosed. :p

If it works well enough to clone, why change it?

Even less work then. Bung in the new hard drive, stick the Windows installation disc in, make yourself a coffee and come back in five minutes. Done. Certainly not £160 worth of labour.

    Hiya CHR15 because I assumed :

    - it was never goosed in the first place, just changed and the old one sold on
    - based on the fact that there is no reinstall OEM disk, but a hidden partition .. .. .. you know the score !

Hi guys,DH has removed the hard drive, and it's a Maxtor mobilemax 80 GB PATA..is that an IDE one?? Sorry, but I know nowt about computers (i'm learning a lot here though!) DH reckons it's most likely the power on switch-it's been "iffy" from brand new...will let you know how he gets on...xx
Edit to say on closer inspection, the little connection pins on the HD appear to be bent..not all, just some...is that normal??
