Need Urgent Advice about PC WORLD and Disgusting cutomer service

Hi Everyone

I hope I have got the correct place to post this but I am so desperate I need your wisdom and advice !

I have an 18 month old Laptop, my son accidentally dropped it onto the dining room table and it didn't work correctly. I took it back into PC World ( six weeks ago) and they said "pay us £69.99 and we will do a full Diagnostics". So I promptly paid them and a week later they called to say that the Motherboard needed replacing so they took it back in and 10 days later I picked it up. The Total cost was £229 ( including the diagnostic fee). I drove the 30 miles home to find that it was still not working so that afternoon, I drove all the way back in there again ( with my Husband) and demanded to see the Manager who then said that they were ever so sorry but it will have to go back to the repairers as the repair didn't seem to have taken effect. So it went back.
Last night I went in again to collect, got home and it still was not working. Took it back in this morning and they tested it and now it has a VIRUS ! !

I was stood in that store and I could have cried. I was so upset that I could barely talk to the bumptious member of staff who didn't seem to worry that I had been without the laptop for over 6 weeks now and that they could not fix the problem and worse still, they have now given me a VIRUS.

They now have taken it back in ( 3rd time) and say that they will be another 10 days ! ! Aaarrggghh ! !

The Manager would not come out and see me and the staff are just Rubbish

I feel that I have been really messed around here and need to complain and get some sort of compensation for what they are putting me through

Any ideas or suggestions would be so gratefully received

Sally:(

PC World are part of the dixons group, I googled up "pc world complaints" and saw some interesting links. I cant post links as im a newbie here at the moment. Im assuming you have access to the net on another PC.

I would ask for the machine to be returned. Do you have data on that machine you need to recover, like photos? If the machine has some malware do not boot it up, as it could make things worse. If you want help on how to backup your data without booting the Windows OS on that machine it is possible, I can provide some guidance there if you need it.

Exact list of things to do.....

1: Never use PC World's infamous repair service..
2: Never recommend your friends to PC World repair service. (If you value your friendship.)
3: Never buy anything at PC World, then you wont have to use their infamous repair service.
4: Never use PC World's infamous repair service.......( did I already mention that one.)
Anyway, my advice would be to get your laptop back ASAP. If it is still not working, take it to a decent independant service engineer. Pay the man. Then take PC World to small claims court for damages, including any dodgy repairs they have done, the repairs by the independant engineer, travel expenses etc. etc....

I would echo tomsolomon above. Avoid PCWorld repairs at any cost.

Look for a local repair firm. Almost all of the ones around here (NE Scotland) will have a look at the machine for free and only charge if they can fix it.

You will get a far better service and quicker repair if you find a good local computer repair firm.

yes thats pretty standard service you've had from PC world, you pay alot of money, they are very slow and generally unhelpful, then you get your machine back with more problems than it had to begin with.

For only £329 odd you could have bought a brand new Dell laptop with a better spec than your 18month old laptop
  • " Motherboard needed replacing "

    - get some evidence of this very particular repair / cost in writing if you can.

It's very very unlikely they would replace a lappie MOBO under any insurance / warranty arrangement, was it a warranty claim ?

If it was warranty, I'll give 1000 to 1 that it's the original MOBO and was never replaced it's just uneconomic to do so.

Then spend £25 quid and bang them into the small claims court on the motherboard issue, you can't prove they didn't change it - and they can't prove they did but they won't want it to go to court.

Your court costs are limited, theirs are not, the version / serial number on the MOBO should identify the makers issue / manufacture date.

I know it's a bit late, but never, ever buy anything from PC World, and never use them for 'servicing'. They are famous for being hideously overpriced and offering awful service.

I purchased a satnav from them and it promptly stopped working after a couple of weeks. Took it back and the idiot there tried to tell me I was lucky as if it had failed a few days later I would have had to deal with TomTom direct. Well I lost it and nearly dragged the little snot over the counter, I then showed him a copy of the sale of goods act, christ you would have thought it was in Latin, anyway I got my money back and have sworn I will never venture in to another PC World as long as I live, they are utter cr4p.....
