I think the OP has been mistaken for a lazy 'what can I get' type.

The OP should be applauded: he is working despite the family problems and the bereavement, and has found that the benefit system has turned against him; he probably would be better off if he shacked up with a girl and got her pregnant.

    He even walks to work!

No flat screen TVs or fat dogs to feed.

Support should be diverted away from those that have never worked and given to ppl like the OP. He sounds like he is on his own and trying to keep his head above water. (I still don't understand why WTC is not paid to those under 25)

Good point about the bike.. Might be worth looking for a free one OP? It would make the walk to work a bit easier and give you more time to either work or look for work.

How about dog walking in your area? Babysitting? Car cleaning? I know it's not much but might help you for a few extra quid a week.

Good luck, keep going.. what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.. that kept me going in the last few months.. :)

Think of the day that you have a good full time job and your own family and work towards that goal! x

My thanks go out to everyone who has helped me :)

and for all you haters, When a person asks for help and you show this level of hate I think It's you that need to make the posts asking for help because if you have that mindset you need more help then me.

There weren't any haters. You were given advice that you either didn't like to hear or that responded before you had given them a full overview of your situation.

I admire your ambition but I don't want you to sleepwalk into student related debt problems in the same way you dozily thought you'd be better off working less.

Make sure you perform proper research on student finance before you ever quit your job as a £30 ALG barely pays for your groceries and most full time students that are healthy and without children do not receive benefits that can cover even a modest amount of their true cost of living. Most just get council tax discount, and not LHA, income support and so forth.

If you did your research Jowo, you would know that the ALG is payable as long as you go to college for 12.5 hrs a week.

I worked full time and still collected the ALG when I was at college last year.

Haters is a strong word I agree - but I also felt, as have others on this thread that the OP was branded a benefit scrounger when he wasn't.

A forum is a two way communication, not a slanging match based on a couple of posts. People should try to give the benefit of the doubt more often, rather than presuming so much.

ALG is only available for full time study, regardless of the number of taught hours.

Not last year (2009/2010) it wasn't, I had to do 12.5 hrs a week, and I did that by doing 1 full day and 1 evening on two different courses?

    There is also EMA?

I was on the ALG though and can confirm I got £30 a week based on my previous years very low income.

Altho, if you earn a certain amount, don't know how much, it can be £10, £20 or £30.

It's strange how the op asked politely and with no ill intent towards anyone and yet he seemed to be receiving a lot of unsightly replies from other posters, namely Morgan_Ree for one.

One wonders why they would take offense in his original post as it seems to me his plea for help was sincere and was no way giving off the impression that the op was "fishing for benefits" I'm sure he could take the easy way out and impregnate someone and that would solve his problems.

However he is trying to find a better way out of his predicament which i think is admirable. :T

The conclusion I took was that of ignorance, Op don't take to heart the comments from Morgan_Ree and such others. They failed to understand your situation. "People don't read what they see, People see what they want to read"

    A question to Morgan_Ree

How can you belittle the OP about wanting to claim benefits when upon looking at your own forum threads (Namely,Childcare allowance for student nurses?, Any single parent students claiming housing benefit?, Reapplying for NHS bursary)
You seem to have the same agenda? This is very hypocritical of you and is a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.

And Viktory attacking his Grammer/spelling Shame on you. £150 a month is nothing Op would be getting more on JSA which is obviously a massive tax on the op. I swear some people have the social skills of a wooden spoon....

You're 19!! Why would you want to be relying on benefits are your age??
    :rotfl::rotfl:

The ignorance in your question astounds me. The answer is simple, Because he need needs them. Op clearly doesn't want to be on benefits as he has stated that.

My advice to the OP lower your working hours to 16 per week and ask your local housing authority to reevaluate your housing benefit.

you will be in the same financial situation as you currently are but that will free up hours for a college course as long as you're doing 12.5 hours per week at college you will be able to to claim ALG and thus your dream to become a paramedic and your financial situation will be solved.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to raise your hours as this would make a college course quite harder to complete.

your ALG will provide you will an extra form of income and it will not impact on any other benefits you could receive
