    Yeah you're right. Telling the OP to try and get his hours back/2nd job/different job is really silly.

    Considering you've also advised OP to get his hours back, the 'sillyness' must be catching

    It was more the 'relying on benefits' comment that I was talking about.

    So what's silly about asking someone why they would want to rely on benefits?

    Hello Everyone :)
    Post post here!

    Well let me tell you little bit about my situation
    * I'm 19 years young
    * I live myself
    * I work
    * I'm Super skink lol

    So about 5 months ago I had to move out of my mothers place due to her illness ( we never got on anyways ) While i was living with my mother I put my self on the waiting list for housing ( was on there for just over a year) I just left college and was job hunting after about four months I found a job !!

    Just as I finished my first month of work i was giving a flat to rent from the council, Within the week I had to leave due to mothers illness. So there's me with Nothing but a bed and my work uniform.

    I applied for housing benefit and council tax benefit I was told i earn to much to get council tax benefit and i was given £1.20 a week for housing benefit.

    My Job
    I work at £5.80 an hour and was doing 21 hours a week/ i get payed the last Friday of every month.. so I get about £500 a month

    My rent and tax
    I have to pay £47.80 rent a week and about £19ish tax a week

    How this works out for me

    On a long month (5 weeks) I have to pay £250 ish on rent and £80-90ish on tax. On a short month (4 weeks) I pay like £50 less

    So I'm left with about £180

    after paying ele bill ( £30ish) £ have 150 to last me the month + fix up the place (Still have next to nothing)

    and I struggle with this soo much I often have days when I don't have the money to eat.

    My dream is to go back to college and learn so I can go and help people in life But as i said before I'm struggling so much atm I just don't want to be here.

    I walk four miles to work do about another 2 miles getting treated like !!!! then end up walking another four miles back and still I have nothing ,makes me sooo sad :(:(

    Someone at work told me to try and lower my hours to 16 So I did for the first of juily i start at 16 hours.

    Should I get more money now ? or am i still missing out.

    Ps: sorry about the how long it got.

    Have you considered an evening class in English? Might help your job prospects.

    How come you can't make £150 a month for food last? (forget about doing the place up at the moment, you clearly can't afford it). On a five week month it is £30 a week, that is plenty for one person.

    i cant understand all the negativity towards the o.p. as far as im concerened the should be congratulated to an extent , if i had lost my mother , been forced to move out and give up on education, work for what seems unrewarding so i could at least have a roof over my head , instead of relying on benefits and falling into a depression, well im not sure if i could, im 18 and to have such indepence would be quite a danting aspect . im sure that ther are emergency loans for people in your situation

    I think it's fantastic that the OP is seeking advice about his situation and is ambitious.

    He's been given good advice by posters here (and poor advice from his own personal circle that gave him the impression he'd be better off working less!).

    The poster did not reveal upfront that he was bereaved.

    Loans are rarely the answer to low income and debts.

    The best route out of poverty is employment. Benefits are a trap that end up paralysing the recipients and robbing them of confidence and ambition. The OP needs to work more hours or find a better paying job.

    They can model benefit entitlements on the Turn2us (entitled to) website. They should download the budget planner on the tools section of this website to better understand their income and expenses. They should use MSE to learn how to live frugally and save money.

    They can use resources like Freecycle, Gumtree freebies, Freegle to furnish their flat at no cost, plus there may be furniture charity shops in the local area that either give their furniture away for free or sell it at low cost, such as the Salvation Army or Emmaus. They may even be able to bag a free bicycle to help them get to work quicker.

    They should research student finances before giving up work and going into full time education because most student finance is inadequate to cover a single person living in self-contained accommodation which is much more expensive than living at home or in shared housing. There are usually plenty of free or cheap part-time courses (ran at evenings) or via distance learning that will allow them to improve their education while working full time.

    Not necessary (libraries offer free Internet access), £3 a week and he might not have gas. People on here have managed on considerably less than £150 a month. The OP should head over to the old style board.

    My thanks go out to everyone who has helped me :)

    and for all you haters, When a person asks for help and you show this level of hate I think It's you that need to make the posts asking for help because if you have that mindset you need more help then me.
