can you tell me what i buy for it to be sheets and blankets? im thinking this is going to be best for my son, he doesnt keep his duvet on, and mine, a feather one, is too hot for him.

Blankets are not cheap and they fly out of charity-shops if they ever turn up there. 100% pure wool ones are heinously expensive but cotton cellular ones night be a better bet as they can be layered to account for the changing seasons and are much easier to launder and dry.

I'd have a quick look on John Lewis' site to price them up first. These days those fleece ones seem quite reasonable and they are very, very warm so could be an alternative.

Don't forget your Hospital Corners to keep the bed looking neat and tidy!

Edit: Another much less expensive solution might be to buy a hollofibre double duvet and tuck one side and the bottom under the mattress so it can't be thrown off or slide off easily.

We made the move to duvets rather than blankets about 30 years ago - and I'd not want to go back. I find blankets very resticting. We have thick and thin duvets which popper together or can be used separately according to the season. I do remember finding it difficult to change the covers in the beginning, but now it's easy! My Mum always used blankets tho'. I guess it's what you get used to. We don't have feathers tho' as I'm asthmatic. Single duvets I can wash in my machine, the larger ones have to be taken to the laundromat.

Blankets are a pain to keep making up every day. I had to stay in a motel for a few weeks where there were blankets, and they just weren't comfortable. Seemed sparse, and not warm. Much prefer a duvet!

Im a dab hand with a crochet hook and some wool, and i have small cupboard full of blankets that he was given when born, so it would just be time needed to make a bed sized blanket, as i get bored doing blankets and tend to make them 'car seat' sized.

would i be buying flat sheets? is that all it is? and put a blanket or 2 on top?

we have a few fleece type ones, but they conduct electricity - u see the blue flash of light!!!

I have debenhams vouchers (that my sis got me for crimbo) which im going to use, so its 'free' and i can get some higher thread count ones.

ooh didnt think of getting him a double n putting it under the matrress.. thank you.... i have a spare double i could use til i get the sheets.

Yes, in order to make a bed with blankets you will need a flat sheet underneath them. If you already have a double duvet then of course you won't need any, just a duvet-cover.

As with most things money-saving, always try the cheapest or no-spendy option first. There's no end of things you can do without or adapt if you put your mind to it.
  • We used to use blankets and sheets as kids and they made me feel like i was being suffocated because they were so heavy! So im defo a duvet person i think :) There's nothing like being all rolled up in a duvet like your the meat of a sausage roll, hahaha :)
6 debts down - 1 to go: just over £1000 though, soon soon....

Staying happy and positive through 2011 (hopefully!) :j

its a light one, it normally only gets used for about a month in the summer, as i live in a wooden house, it retains heat like no ones business, even with all the windows wide open to try and create a bit of wind, which is brill for the gas bill, but not soo good in the winter when it was at minus 12 outside, boy could we feel it! hence the feather duvet.

Im thinking i might go to my grandas and see if my nana had any flat sheets, im sure she would have, she had EVERYTHING u could ever think off! (i take after her, both in crafting and hoarding! haha
ill give it a try before buying.
Thank you for all you help

I used to have blankets as a child. Did anyone else get tucked in so tightly that you couldn't move?! :rotfl:I do like having duvets - it's so much quicker to make up a bed in the morning. My parents used to have a hotel, and I had a summer job as a chambermaid endlessly making beds every day.

I hate sharing a duvet though - I like to get snuggled under it, so if DH moves and the duvet moves even a fraction off me I get cross. So I've just ordered two singles :D

Angel, that's a throw not a blanket. Pay special attention to the dimensions as I suspect that if your child sleeps in a standard single bed it won't be big enough. I make the length at 152cms and width at 132cms as around 60x50 inches.

When I go back home I sleep in old style sheets and blankets. It's not bad, possibly because I like my mattress so much and have my favorite pillows. But if you layer a couple of blankets on top of each other, it's usually warm enough! Still, I prefer my duvet over OS sheets/blankets any day!
