Does your bed have sheets & blankets instead of a duvet?

I have to admit I prefer using sheets and blankets, shame really as dh and ds won't go for it. I love that 'all wrapped up' feeling you get with them. We always had sheets and blankets as kids - I presume duvets weren't really around much in the 70s/80s?
I'd never seen one until I went on a school exchange trip to Germany in 1972. I didn't see one again until I went to University in 1975. I haven't, voluntarily, slept under anything else since.:)
In summer we sleep under just the empty cover, if anything.0 -
We bought our first duvet in 1973 (goose down) and have used one ever since. However, this winter I added an old (pre 1973 hardly used kept 'just in case') blanket to the bottom of the bed and since then we have slept really well. Prior to the blanket we were both waking up at 4am.
Maybe it's something to do with our age.0 -
I can't remember when duvets came in in this country but my German granny, my Oma, had what we called the feather-bed which didn't have pockets or channels sewn into it, it was just like an enormous pillow. In summer the feathers were shaken to the edges so it wasn't too hot. It was one of her wedding presents in about 1920-something and it's still going strong on my Tante's bed. We'd fight to get under there with our Oma in the mornings. Oh, happy days!0

As a child we always had sheets and blankets with a candlewick counterpane over the top. In the summer the dreaded orange Bri-nylon sheets and counterpane would be put on the bed , combine that with a nylon nightie and there'd be sparks every time you turned over!
I like a duvet now but I do like the weight of a blanket on the top in the winter.Dum Spiro Spero0 -
Beat this if you can,
On top of a kingsized bed - one 13.5 duvet, one thick double sleeping bag, 1 kingsized bed spread.
Inside the bed, large pillow on one side to create a cocoon and furry hot water bottle plus when its very cold furry socks and full length pjs!!!!!!!! :rotfl:
Blankets wouldn't work for me. Think one day I may emerge as a butterfly if I'm not careful! But I do stay warm. :j0 -
Hi, I know I posted on this thrad earlier, but it was summer time then.
Now we have a sheet, duvet (low tog summer one, never bought a winter one), one blanket and a small throw.
We prefer the weight now of the covers, rather than just a duvet.0 -
You can wash feather duvets in a washing machine, the most important thing is to dry it thoroughly in a dryer. I worked in a Hotel and the laundry people told me this.Grocery challenge year budget €3K Jan €190 Feb €225 Mar €313 Apr €202 May €224 June €329 July €518 Aug €231Sep €389 Oct €314 Nov €358 Dec €335 Total spent €3628

Has to be quilts. I had sheets, blankets and bedspread (yep candlewick) as a child and too asked for a quilt as a pressie. 10th birthday - I think. Never really called them duvets, consider it an ugly word, so we have always called them quilts, never continental, but I do remember others calling them that.Put the kettle on.0
