Does your bed have sheets & blankets instead of a duvet?

When I was a kid my gran always had beds made up with sheets and blankets instead of duvets, and although I hated sleeping in them at the time I have since stayed in hotels with beds made up this way and don't mind it so much anymore. I do love the snuggly feeling of a duvet but when I strip the bed off I do think its pretty unhygienic that I can't bung it in the washing machine (it's feather). I know that they can be specialist cleaned but realistically that isn't going to happen regularly and fiber stuffed ones always end up lumpy! So i'm thinking of switching to the OS way of doing things. Anyone else sleep with the OS sheets and blankets? And is it ok or really cold in winter?

A high quality fibre duvet shouldn't go lumpy.

I work in a shop and we do fibre ones that can be washed at 60degrees to kill off dustmites :) won't give them free advertising though lol. Although more expensive they will last!

They have the benefit of layering - just use one blanket in summer but use two or three in winter. And three layered blankets will usually be warmer than a duvet (depends on togs of course!).

I used to work in nursing and we always, always used blankets...

not sure I could ever go back to sheets and blankets, always find them awkward to sleep under when in a hotel, they don't seem to move with me like a quilt does :)

I use a duvet, I like to bundle myself up in it :D I really don't like sheets over me when they're tucked in as I like my feet to be free! If I stay in a hotel where they have sheets and a blanket, I have to completely untuck it all the way round before I can get in.

At the moment we use a sheet, blanket and throw.

I've been thinking about getting rid of the duvet in the winter and using blankets as it makes the bed much quicker to make, rather than fighting with the duvet cover.

I think this as convinced me, thanks.

I love vintage bedlinen and have gradually collected a fair few pure cotton sheets and pillowcases, some with gorgeous edgings or embroidery on them. I also collect Durham quilts (For an example see here) and the only way to see and appreciate the hand stitched pattern is to have them on a bed. I must admit though that I was reluctant to give up my feather duvet and for a while I settled for putting a Durham Quilt over the duvet during the day. This didn't enable me to display the sheets and pillowcases though. I decided to try making the bed up with the top and bottom sheets and the vintage pillowcases instead of pillowcases that match the duvet, but instead of blankets I still use the duvet instead of the blanket layer, then have my Durham quilt over that. I find it very cosy and comfortable (Though as the weather has heated up I have temporarily removed the duvet and just have sheets and Durham quilt at the mo) - I'm also using and displaying my vintage bed linen and it doesn't matter if my duvet cover matches/is a bit shabby because it's not on show.

I don't have a duvet, and much prefer sheets and blankets as I can regulate how hot/cool I want to be, When I had a duvet it seemed te choice was either -
covered by duvet - too hot
not covered by duvet - too cold

I tried different tog ratings but went back to sheets and blankets when I separated. Last week it was just a sheet, but last night I put on my heavy cotton throw as well.

i have both - in the winter I like to be super snuggly and have a duvet with blankets layered on top - I liek the weight of a blanket but the fluffy snuggliness of a duvet
