if your worried about your own kids it will almost certainly make them nicer people, it would give them a better understanding of special needs. as for sell on effects not too sure, are you looking at the property because its 'cheap'? if so, then yeah it will affect the property price!

The residents wouldn't worry me at all. It's the staff coming/going and cars, with doors closing that'd wind me up.

Who knows, your child/ren might become like them one day. You need to realise it can be anyone.

Don't try to insinuate your own prejudices into your children. Just bear in mind that if you had another, he or she could be born with a disability or even a small accident or virus could affect one of your own.

In my experience kids are alot less bothered about how people look than adults. I was slightly concerned when I came off my bike a few weeks ago and completely rearranged my face, that I was going to scare my friend's toddler when I left the hospital. He wasn't fazed at all.
Kids are often curious and want to ask why someone looks like they do but unless they've been told they should keep away from people who look like X or pick attitudes up from their parents they're remarkably unfazed or bothered about how people look.

I wouldn't be bothered about buying the house though yes, it may affect you selling it later. As Pasturenew said, I'd be more concerned about the possible traffic noise associated with it.

Being selfish about it, if it is a semi what would worry me most is noise within the house - if the residents need 24 hour care, there could easily be people moving about in the early hours of the morning looking after them which would be fine once or twice but if it was every night it might get to be a big issue.

im not but i have been in the supermarket with my eldest and he has reacted not too positively to these people and i agree it would probably make them much more understanding and hopefully a better person than i but at the same time i dont want to buy a house where my kids are scared

If this is the way you ae thinking you really shouldn't buy the house next door. You'll read what isn't there into everything you see and hear the people next door do.

It would be interesting if "these people" were able to have a say on who they wanted living next door to them.

I have worked with people with special needs all of my career, you need to look beyond their disabilities, we have a lot to learn from them, believe me. My children were also involved with my students from a young age and both have turned out to be caring individuals.

It enabled them to become aware that we are all different and to appreciate their own abilities.

Would I live next door to a care home for people with special needs? I would not give it a second thought.
