At the end of the day we all know that cutting calories and upping exercise = weight loss. It's the motivation & commitment we lack! the 'diet' I am trying to stick to this time is basically reducing my carbs (no bread for a start!), increasing my protein and veg and eating more 'clean' foods ie. non-processed. I heard a good definition of a clean food is one that resembles it's original source so a salmon fillet looks like a fish but a fish finger does not!

It's amazing! I just wish I'd tried it years ago. It's been very easy so far and I haven't felt like cheating once which is amazing for me! :j

Well done on your weight loss and keeping it off! It must have made a major difference to your life! I've only lost 40lbs so far and I feel great and my confidence is at an all time high! I can't begin to imagine how I'll feel when I get to my target!:D

Don't know if anybody else has already posted this as haven't read all 3 pages, but I found Sparkpeople incredibly helpful and motivating when I was losing weight. It's a free online community and all the members are very supportive and it's full of useful tools and articles, and you get your own blog page where you can keep track of your progress (or not). Some of the blogs on there are very motivational (i.e, women who were once 30 stone and now run 5k's or triathlons etc). Doesn't cost anything so worth a look.

Bronnie - Not sure if your still around because you have edited your post mentioning the Rosemary Connolly classes. I just wanted to thank you for mentioning it, I went to a class on wednesday and had a really good time. I weighed in a 10 st 9 lb and am aiming to lose a stone....

As you said they give you lots of weightloss goodies and am altering my eating habits, small changes following their guidance which will (hopefully) add up to a signifigant weight loss :j:j In fact it seems to be the perfect diet for me because of the focus on portion sizes rather than banning food and on low GI food since I am hypo.

Glad you enjoyed the Rosemary Conley class......i did too, I thought it was great!

I've done Slimming World and WW over the years, but never Rosemary Conley. I thought the exercise part is such a sensible and obvious idea, as opposed to the other groups where you spend your time sitting on your !!!, obsessing about food.

In fact, in the class I went to food was actually not even mentioned in the group situation. I am hoping to lose a stone too. Our short talk was about exercise and overcoming the excuses we make not to, then it was on with the action. The weigh-in was done in a private room and there was obviously chance to discuss the week's progress ( or lack of). The diet is simple and flexible and healthy.

How refreshingly sensible is what I say.

Glad you're positive about it topdrawer, me too. I've had a really good week, WI on Monday. I feel I have pushed food into a less important place in my mind this week and have been quite routine in eating simple healthy stuff and my scales are showing good results. I'm also starting a beginners Pilates class next week. keep up the good work!

PS loving the comment in this thread.....everytime I read my WW book I fancied a Penguin! So true!

PPS in true MSE style and since I already had measuring cups and a tape measure, , I ebayed 3 of my freebies and made £12 so my 5 weeks classes including exercise session and free membership have cost me £16!!!
  • I have lost 24lbs in 4 weeks by following the Cambridge Weight Plan - Sole Source. I know it's controversial, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I have an awful lot of weight to lose - another 57lbs to be precise!
I also use our Wii Fit Plus just about every day, even if for only 30 minutes. It's really rather nice being able to fit into clothes from 2 years ago; and the rapid weight loss is very motivational. I absolutely appreciate that once I reach my target weight then the real work begins. I have to relearn all my eating habits, and understand what my body is intolerant to. (At this stage I think it's carbohydrates, but I'm being tested nearer the time to make absolutely sure)
I've given up alcohol too. After 7 weeks I find I don't miss it all now.
There are those who will say that they can't afford to do Cambridge/LL/Lipotrim etc, but actually, at the risk of sounding harsh, I'm not sure you get to be obese by spending under £40 a week on food!
The upsides to this are the incredibly quick results. The downsides are that if you're not careful you can have breath that would fell a rhino (drink plenty of water!)
I would be happy to recommend it to anyone feeling sad and/or desperate about their weight.

I follow simple rules. Make life style changes not short term ones. E.g I gave up Sugar completely and try to exercise 3 trimes a week. This will get you long term benefits instead of short term once which you get with Fad diets.

We all know what is Good and Bad for us and you don't need a book or pretty graph to tell you that.

  • Whilst your principles hold true each of us has a different metabolism and therefore our bodies react differently to certain food stuffs. For instance some of us can manage carbs whilst owing to metabolic syndrome some of us can't.
"Fad" diets certainly have their place. In the case of an obese person, placing them on a very low calorie diet in combination with counselling can help them to see quick results which keep them motivated. During this initial phase you have the perfect opportunity to address whichever psychological issues are contributing to their lack of weight management, and also to engage them in an education programme to unlearn bad eating habits and learn new and lasting good ones.
