Congratulations on your 'very good job'......How is McDonalds btw :D

I am very offended by this remark. I work at McDonalds and I work very hard. It's not all about 'burgers and pop', just as Tesco (which I have also worked at in the past) is not all about the people serving you on the checkout.

I can honestly say that working at McDonalds is the best job I have ever had. They are flexible with people who have children, they actually reward you for hard work, and they value their staff.

Someone has to work in places like this, and I think it's very rude to make assumptions about their social background etc because of their job. (I already have 1 degree and I am studying for a 2nd so I don't think that fits me into your category of a low under-educated background now does it).

It seems to me like you have made these comments to get a reaction and you enjoy seeing others getting angry about them, thus making you feel like you are somehow above us all.

    Well said.

I can't be bothered to enter debates with the likes of that poster, hence my short, and to the point, answers to him/her.

I used to work at Homebase (still public, just not food). I had people complain because we didn't have a ready mixed paint available to match their curtains, and then complaining further that it took all of three minutes to mix one, and again when it cost a pound more than the standard range!

We had people asking why we didn't sell smaller bags of sand, or sheds that would look better in the gardens. We even had people complaining that when they dropped a box of tiles, it split, the tiles broke and the dust had got onto their shoes.

We had a little sign -

    Often confused, misinformed, offensive,
    rude and downright stupid.

    ha ha :D

    Some people are funny.

This reminds of that person who took a comb in to some DIY store and asked the asst. to mix them some paint of that colour.

The asst. looked at the comb, at the customer, back at the comb before saying 'wouldn't it be easier to buy a new comb?'

There are rude and stupid people everywhere.

    But, they brighten the day.

I heard on the Graham Norton show......

Customer "I bought three of these and this disposable bbq has no meat in it".
Shopworker (showing cover) "It's a serving suggestion"
Customer "Oh. I better take the other two out of the freezer then".

I have a lot of sympathy for the OP and others having worked in retail myself for many years.

One thing you often found (and are still finding it on this thread) is that people assume that because you are working in a supermarket/McDonalds etc, then you must be stupid or uneducated, when this was usually far from the case. Most employees were actually students or parents trying to work around the children.

The amount of abuse you get from the public is outrageous, even when you are perfectly polite to them. It is REALLY hard to keep that smile on your face when you have been moaned at by every person who has gone through the till that day. You do find that most people who have worked in customer services are a lot politer because they know what it's like.

One of the things I often used to get when working on the shop floor was an accusation that I was too lazy to go out the back and check whether something was in stock or not. In actual fact the reason I didn't waste my time and go out and check, was either because I'd already checked that day or it was my department, and I knew full well the item was not in stock!

Used to bug me a lot too but I can understand why
when I worked at WHsmith I went shopping in a much bigger WHS one day, they had something I wanted but it was damaged so asked a lady there if they had a non damaged one - she said no but I somehow knew she just couldn't be bothered, asked someone else and they found me a replacement (nice member of staff got evil looks from the not so nice one for making her look like an idiot when she saw)...really annoyed me talk about letting the side down!

There's a few things I would like to add. Completely agree and sympathise with OP.

I work with the public and always have. No my job is not 'low end'. I enjoy working with the public and could never see myself doing anything else. However, whilst 95% of the people i deal with are lovely, the other 5% need to remember a few things...

If you respect me, i will respect you. If you are pleasent and polite to me i will WANT to go the extra mile for you to make you happy, even if you are being a pain, and i will get job satisfaction. If you swear at me and patronise me, i'm not going to bother. So no, you will not get the extra mile that the nice clients get becuase quite frankly, i don't want to ever want to deal with you again.

I DO NOT MAKE THE RULES. So if you have an issue with the rules, follow the complaints procedure. Or ask me in a polite tone how to take this further. I will often agree that you need to make a complaint and help you doing so when this is justified. I understand that bad things happen and that you are angry and i will try to help you. This is until you blame me, personally (one person advised me they would wait for me outside my place of work) and when you do, i will loose interest in what you have to say.

The FOS does not scare me. Nor does the Sun / Mail / Watchdog / Internet. The reason for this is because i do my job well. I follow procedure. So no, you're not in the right, but maybe if you listened to me the first time you wouldn't have this problem. You are wastinbg your time, effort emotion and money taking your unjustified complaint to any of these people.

'I want to speak to the manager, you can't help me!'. I am the manager. There is no one else to speak to.

Always remember, you came to me. Therefore you want a service. Do not tut / sigh / mutter under your breath / swear / huff / grump at me when i am trying to explain the service we provide. If you don't want the service, go somewhere else.

And one other thing... when you're on the phone and put your hand over the reciever i can still hear the 'f****** useless b****'.

Yes you are the customer, no you are not always right. When you have the product knowledge and training that i do, then come back and contest me. Until then I can assure you I am right.

I love the public. I really do! I also believe that every consumer / customer / client / person should do a month in a job that involves working with the public. The 'bad' customers would soon change their attitude!

I chose to do this job because i love it. It's just a shame that a minority sometimes make it a long, hard slog!

I think this is a HUGELY valid point - if you are polite (even when you have good reason to be in a grump!) you will get so much further!

I had a problem with a checkout assistant a few months back, got in her queue, was there a good few minutes and then she said "I'm closing" I said "Ok, will tell anyone that comes behind me", she shouted, really rather loudly "No I'm closing after the man in front of you", so I told her I had been there a while, the people in front of me told her too, she just carried on shouting at me and told me she didnt have time, I said "you are soooooo rude" (my exact words haha) and walked off to another till, was served by a lovely young guy who was the complete opposite to her, told her what happened, he called his supervisor over, they told someone else who would deal with it, when I left she was having a laugh and a joke with the person who was supposed to be dealing with it so when I got home I emailed head office who were great, she got the bollocking she deserved.

I'm never rude to people, I hate rudeness so why did she feel the need to be rude to me? Maybe it makes her feel big? After speaking to others about her they say she is always rude to people, so why does Tesco still employ her?
