its threads like this (and Eagerlearners deposit saga,) which bring out the very best in posters' humanity and caring - its such a tonic to read this, and to be a part of this community, knowing that one Tiny piece of information read here by someone, could make an incalculable difference to a family's live.

    Take it from here.

Well done mate - but did you include a picture or two to highlight the problem?

Doesn't matter if you didn't, but if you get a "standard" reply - possible from the MP but the councillors should be more pro-active from the start - then write to them again, enclosing a picture or two.

Also, find out when your MP is holding his next surgery in the area and pay him a visit. Give it a week or two so that the MP will have seen the letter and then attend the surgery. A phrase to your MP along the lines of "I did write you a letter 2 weeks ago Mr x, however,, my housing situation is now so bad that...."

    Good luck!

And never accept from anybody that the fact that you are paying cheap rent should mean you have to put up with it.

How have you got on with contacting EH,? This time I would suggest that you stress they must visit.

I sent a link to all my photos. I've had one reply off a local councillor and he's said he needs to contact EH about it.

He has asked me for the name of the EH officer that came out last year, and also my address.

LL still hasn't delivered our letter stating that he won't be renewing our contract in Feb. Suprise Suprise!!

I have also been advised to get a builder round for a estimate and a break-down of all work needed to rectify the problem. Then I can tell my LL what I think of his silicone fix.

I personally think it would cost about 2k to fix it.

Jeez, just written a long post out and its told me invalid thread.....Try again!

Not getting very far with MP/Local councillor. No reply from MP, one reply from local councillor. Doesnt want to reply anymore.

Had a visit from that other LL last night, giving us first refusal on a house in the area we are in currently. He wants £410/month + £410 bond.

He has told us to go and get some forms to see if we could get any help with rent as I'm on a low wage. We have done this and will be filling it in tonight, 'maybe-new-LL-to-be' needs to sign it and send it back - Monday 9/10/06.

We have also been offered a property in Brighouse for £400/month (having a new bathroom and kitchen fitted at moment - can move in 6 weeks)

Problem now is finding all that money for first month/bond. Basically about £800 we need to find.

Only way we could save that cash is by not paying our current LL his rent. What would happen? Evication order after court? Would we have to pay the unpaid rent back? Is our contract void because of the damp?

Do you see where I'm coming from or am I going about things completely the wrong way?

    Thx

  • T4i, that's brilliant news that you've got offers of better places. I really hope one of them works out for you. Have you heard back from the Council yet?

Not paying the rent sounds risky in case you end up having to stay put a bit longer, maybe someone more knowledgeable will read this and give you a clearer idea of the position.

go to the council and ask if they have a Bond Board - an organisation which can loan you the bond - if they dont know, ask Shelter.

if you dont pay your rent here - why would your new landlord want to offer you a tenancy ?
