It depends on your individual policy. There's downsides to all policies. CPWs is expensive but if you follow the t&c to the letter, they pay out without hassle but always, always read the policy documents. So many people get caught out that way.

Bank insurances tend to be good value for money but not if you want instant replacement. My bank can take up to 28 days to issue a cheque after a successful claim but I'm happy waiting as I can just buy handsets from where I work.

Home insurances can be excellent, especially if you have a separate clause for mobile devices but as I said, always read the document wording before taking out the policy, otherwise you might end up like my sister.

i had a quick read on two of the recommended phone insurance and they are extremely cheaper than CPW's. and it also tates that they can replace your phone within 48 hours. that sounds like a good deal right?

Will the home insurance cover the mobile phone as well? is that so? 'cause i havn't took out a home insurance as i live in a hospital accomodation and so far i havn't has any bad experience yet. and if Yes then which company can give a cheap home insurance deal that covers a high-end mobile phone or phones?

Are you saying you have no contents insurance?

So if you arrived home one day and found that you had been burgled you could afford to replace everything you own out of your own pocket,

Oscar is spot on here contents insurance is the way to go

The two companies that Martin recommends are very poor, if you google the companies its one horror story after another any excuse not to pay out.

I've just added away from home cover on my contents insurance to cover my iPhone 4 i got £2000 worth of cover for £18 a year and this also would cover things such as my golf clubs and laptop if i were to lose them or accidentally damage them.

Individaul phone insurance is a total rip off

Individual phone insurance is a total rip off...? really? if i take out a home insurance and my high-end phone got lost at work and NOT at inside home will this still cover it?

and why would you not go for the two companies that Martin has recommended?

I really recommend opening a Smile More account. Its £13 a month for the account, for which you get this astounding range of benefits

As well as travel insurance, breakdown cover which includes relay and home assist, you get the most comprehensive mobile phone insurance I have found for up to four phones, from an insurer who actually is likely to pay out when you need them to.

In addition to that you can insure all your other gadgets as well, like cameras and laptops.

I would get in there before they change their minds!

(Most home insurance wont cover unattended loss, fraudulent calls, accidental damage out of the home, or water damage anywhere)

yes it would be covered - or mine would be - as i said it's cover away from the home so it could be at work on the golf course etc etc

Anywhere away from the home basically.

As for the two companies Martin mentioned i previously did some research and found lots of stories of people moaning that the insurers were finding anyway they could to get out of paying.

Some companies mention they will cover accidental loss but very few of them do and then you read the small print and they did not offer it for iPhones, which is what i have.

As i said my extra cover costs me just £1.50 per month and also covers other items away from the home as well.

Whereas individual phone insurance is ranging anywhere from £7 up to £15 a month for the like of O2 insurance.

It's up to you but i know which one makes more sense to me.

i rung Nationwide yesterday morning and based on the questions they have asked (about my home situation, etc.) i will be paying around £44/mo. which i simply cannot afford.

i heard that the 2 mobile phone insurance companies mentioned on my thread that someone don't "trust" them with some horror stories along with them. what is your take on this? a dedicated phone insurance company surely would be practical and perhaps cheaper than what CPW (or Geek sqaud) is offering me now which is £11.99/mo.

I have just read (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-10724805) that the mobile phone recycling companies are now signing up (90% so far) to check all phones they buy against the stolen phones databases.

This they believe, and I am inclined to agree, will reduce the reason for anyone to steal a phone because (a) the phone will be blocked in the UK and (b) the recylers wont buy it (they pay about £200 for an iphone) so what can they do with it?

You have to remember that all insurance is a gamble, if you dont take insurance and something happens you loose, if you take insurance and nothings happens you loose.

This gamble is also effected by the length of your contract. If you take out a 12 month contract and you dont insure the phone and it gets lost/stolen you have saved the excess (£25 minimum I think) plus the number of months premiums you have paid but wont have a high end phone until you can get an upgrade. In the mean time you spend the £25 plus the saved premiums or less on something that will get you by for the rest of the 12 months.
