    I absolutely agree.

Tell her the money's turned up and just give the equivalent back to her. Otherwise it's even more upsetting for someone who sounds like she's been through enough as it is.

I agree, and perhaps the OP and her BF need to ask themselves if they would happily accept a gift of several hundred pounds out of the blue from the lady. If they wouldn't, then they need to find some way of reimbursing her.
It was a mistake, but one that can very easily be rectified.

I feel hurt that people think we could have taken it, It was just a stupid mistake and thought it might help others but we have just been branded thiefs.
I don't think anyone's suggesting you took it. One poster made a joke about hols but followed it with smileys, that was all.

I'm sorry if you took a bit of stick but people on here tend to take the side of anyone who seems to have been hard done by and, on the surface of it, that would appear to have been your elderly relative. And you yourself accept it was a stupid mistake.

I think we all just hope that you are able to put her back in the position she was in before the mistake occurred.

Those money tin things are incredibly light - I always thought this was the big flaw in them, the illusion it is a real tin is gone as soon as you pick them up - your story sounds rather fishy to me!!
Maybe this lady was canny enough to put a weight inside, padded to give the illusion of real soup ...

Lots of the tins were as old as 2002, dont date stuff for no reason.
Yup, there's a reason, and with tins it's to make us think that it's unsafe so we buy more. Honestly, tins are practically bomb proof. If the tin remains in good condition it won't have deteriorated at all. There's a teeny tiny risk of botulism in certain types of tinned fish, but even that is only a risk if the tin is damaged, I believe.

    Linky ...

BTW, I do take notice of the dates on fresh and chilled food, but not religiously, and I use my common sense. Tins - boff!

It's a shame the district the lady lives in isn't into recycling. If I don't empty my tins, wash them and put them in the appropriate box the binmen don't take them.

On the contrary, there is something they can do. Replace the money.

I put my empty tins through the dishwasher before I recycle them......(I know, I know!).

Yup, me too. and glass jars and even plastic containers. That looks even worse now I've written it down.
