You haven't mentioned whether you've replaced her money that you threw out?
Don't go rifling through other people's stuff without their permission whether they are elderly/disabled or not."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Thanks larmy 16, the relative in question is really organised with her finances and stuff ,she is not one of these old dears that keeps £1000,s at home. The tin was used for keeping her monthly pension(money for shopping and other every day expenses in) to use as and when she needed it,so probably a few 100,s rather than 1000,s in it.I am going to ring the council tommorrow and see if it can be retrived,a long shot i know but at least it worth a go.0

I can completely understand the need to clean out cupboards, re-stock etc, and I did the same for my gran when she was in hospital, but cannot understand how you could mistake the tin for a real one - especially if you were looking at them closely for sell-by dates!
Have you reimbursed her?
I didnt do it personally,it was my partner ,her nephew but im not passing the buck as we were both to blame,He did the larder i did the fridge.0 -
i've got some of those tins, they dont have a date on them,so how could you chuck it as past sell by date? and i would freak if anybody went in any of my cupboards or drawers if i wasnt here.Shine on you crazy diamond..............0

......the relative in question is really organised with her finances and stuff ,......
then what on earth were you doing? If she's so organised, she was obviously capable of deciding for herself what to throw away.
(a) interested to know what the sell=by date was on this particular tin
(b) hope you've reimbursed her fully
Bet she doesn'tleave her key with you again!0 -

So we have two warnings from this threat:
1 Don't keep cash in a make believe soup can which someone can throw out when you are otherwise occupied.
2 Don't throw out things that belong to other people.0 -
When we bought her home we decided to clear out food cupboard...
If the OP bought the home perhaps the elderly relative will not be returning to live in the home in which case it is not unreasonable to dispose of foodstuffs well past their best before dates. I wouldn't regard going through someone's larder as an intrusion like going through their personal papers.
I hope the fact that the tin wasn't noticeably light and didn't rattle doesn't indicate that it was packed full of notes.
I think that the original point is good that ones executors at least need to be told places for hidden cash and documents.0 -
