What do you use to tie your dog up outside?

I've got a basic dog lead made of nylon (I think) which can be a bit slippy when I tie it in a double knot if I tie the dog up outside a shop. It came undone once - luckily when I was in a tiny shop up a lane in a tiny village where I work so no traffic to worry about and he didn't wander off or anything but I realised I needed to get something more secure. I was having a look on the Internet and came across a Petloc which looked just the thing but was £30.

Anyone come across anything a bit cheaper?
Marg :)

I use a normal lead but do not tie the knot - I unclip the lead, put it through the loop (the handle bit) round the lamp post (or something arond this strenght - got a GS LOL) and clip back on again.

Hope the above makes some sense?

Simple to do, more complicated to explain lol
  • I do the same, loop the lead through the handle and clip it back on. However my preferred lead is the halti training lead which has clips on both ends and several bits along the length of the lead which have a loop to clip onto so I can do it very easily now without ever needing to unclip

I have never, and would never, tie my dog up outside a shop because I'm paranoid/scared about the trend in dog thefts these days.

But when we first got Bruce we were still finishing refencing the back garden so he could not go outside unattended as the garden wasn't secure. While we were out there working we just used a normal chain lead with leather handle. Looped it through the handle as described above, and clipped it onto a retractable lead which then clipped onto his harness. Job done, full roam of the garden but he never got away ;)

Oh, Zara is not agressive towards people at all - with a small exption of Police, she does not seem to like uniforms ;)

She is just a cuddly furball and loves everyone...

Some dogs is aother matter, people are all her friends.. in her head but - they dont know that and she looks rather impressive so they tend to avoid her, doubt anyone would come near her when she is on her own...

Saying that - the only place she ever gets leaft alone is outside the petrol station where I live, everyone knows her there and she is in my full view when I go in for 30 sek for my ciggies....

I would never, ever, in a million years tie my dog up outside a shop. As a volunteer for doglost I see how many dogs are stolen in this way.

For the same reason I also don't leave dogs alone in a parked car as it is very common for cars to be stolen with dogs in them.

The other thing to consider is that you are putting your dog in a very vulnerable position by tieing them up. Anybody or any dog could do anything to your dog and he wouldn't be able to escape.

If however I need to tether a dog for any other reason then it will be lead around post and through handle and back onto collar.
A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.
