And how many iphones is it available on?
Everyone who wants it I imagine and touch owners as well. But if you dont mind your phone constantly rebooting, buggy operating system having to bu a spare battery or 2 because the original wont last and having to fork out for expensive memory then buy an android.

There is very little to choose from in the way what they can do (iphone and Desire) but for price and the way in which Android is 'open' makes it better.

Yes I think Android phones are definitely more customisable than iPhones.

The "open-ness" of the app stores is a bit of a moot point really though when it comes to what the phones can actually do - although Apple have been guilty of what looks like censorship in a few cases, some of these that reached the media resulted in reversals of decisions by Apple. Certain other things are really imposed by the mobile networks rather than Apple in particular - yes you can set up tethering for instance without paying an extra fee to your mobile network, but especially now with networks introducing caps on data use, you'd end up paying in data charges if you tethered your laptop to your phone for browsing.

When it comes to media playback etc, it's worth remembering that just because you can access the iTunes store from your phone doesn't mean you have to buy music or videos from it - I have never bought a video from the iTunes store, but it's easy to convert your own DVD collection for iTunes (iPod, iPhone, AppleTV) use.

On the price issue, it's interesting to look at the resale price of iPhones, even ones which are really quite old and not in perfect condition. I wouldn't consider paying the sorts of prices they go for, but apparently lots of people do! So if you pay a lot for an iPhone, you may get quite a bit back if you later sell it. I'm not sure if there's comparable info on resale prices for Android phones yet, as they've not been around as long as iPhones.

If you do have an Android phone the following apps are well worth having a look at:

    0870
    3g Watchdog
    Barcode Scanner
Catch That Bus (A very very good app that finds bus stops in your area, tells you where they go and when with departure times and the company that run the bus)
Compass (just as good as the iphone version)
Documents To Go (View, edit, write and send docs and spreadsheets)
    eBay
    Engadget
    Finance
    Google Translate
    Heart (Radio)
Hotels By Me (View and book hotel rooms)
London Journey (1st Class London travel app with planner etc)
    Yahoo Messanger
    Movies (Flixter)
    MP Expenses Checker
    Multimap
MyPlayer (BBC iplayer, BBC are releasing the iplayer in the next update)
    NHS Near (Find dentists etc)
    Ocado
    OpenTable (View and book tables)
    Package Tracking
    Paypal
    Photowall
    RAC Traffic
    Shazam
    Shopper
    Shopsavvy
Stats (View data, calls and sms usage)
    Travel News (Direct.gov)
    TV Guide
    UK Traffic Checker
woZZon (Find events in your area and national events)
Virtual Swanage ( A good little app that needs some work but if you live in the area is very good)

If type in UK in the search bar it will also show all apps that are UK specific.

Most of these are on the iphone platform and may be a shock to some to see that it isnt just the iphone that has them. Android may have some pretty useless apps but then iOS has just as many as do other platforms so to say that iOS has the best is a little narrow minded.

What? My Desire has never rebooted in 3 months of ownership, I've no need of a spare battery as battery life is as good as any other smartphone (but at least I have the option), I've not encountered any OS bugs and memory is bog industry-standard micro-SD. How much do you have to fork out to add memory to an iPhone?

That would be an extra £100 to get from a 16gb to a 32gb :rotfl: and they say micro sd cards are expencive

    Other
I voted 'Other' - the reason being the BADA OS from Samsung.

Just got the Samsung Wave a few days ago and I have to say I'm impressed. The Wave is the first handset to feature Samsungs new BADA OS and it ain't a bad first attempt at all. There is massive room for improvement but I'm sure the same was said of iPhone OS and Android OS on their first release. Apps are a little thin on the ground at the moment but I'm sure that will change in time. I think with BADA OS Samsung may just have something that will trade blows with iPhone OS and Android OS in the future ;)

I can only really comment on apple and blackberry as just replaced my second hand curve 8900 with a second hand iphone 3gs.

My main requirement for a phone is easy to use email calendar and contacts and the curve is terrible for this compared with the 3gs. The curve will only let me view my "inbox" and hides all my other email folders, and i get annoyed that emails that I have read on my PC show as "unread" on the curve.

The 3gs integrates really well with both my personal email (imap) and my work email, calendar and contacts vs the curve which was an exercise in frustration. Also ever tried reading a pdf attachment on the curve - almost impossible!

    iPhone
I have used both an iPhone 3G and an HTC Desire and the iPhone is by far the better phone. My main gripes about the Desire are:

the keyboard - the auto correct can be both helpful and annoying.
the SMS system - how when I select someone's name in the to field does it select someone else halfway up the list?
Android Market - there is so much rubbish in it, finding a decent app is like finding a needle in a haystack and why price apps in euro, dollars and sterling in the UK?
Stability - HTC Sense is a fan of restarting and I have to pull the battery out of the phone sometimes to get it to turn off as it just hangs on shut down.

Yes the iPhone does have its issues but I can't wait to sell the Desire and buy an iPhone again.

Yes but that only lets you use Skype for instant messaging...you cannot use Fring (or any other third party app on Android) to make worldwide phone calls or send SMS messages using your Skype account. On my iphone i have barred intl calls/sms for obvious reasons instead using Skype through 3G...why can't i do the same on my Nexus One?

IMHO The Nexus One is a good phone but nowhere near as good as the iphone 3GS+ for useability.

You could until it was killed!
