Skype is only available on a handful of Android handsets, i can assure you its not available on the nexus one. Skype is really useful for sending cheap SMS messages overseas, not to mention cheap calls overseas using your 3G internet connection.

As for the amazon app, just searched for it on Android Market on my N1 but still couldn't find it...why is that then?

You can get access to Skype on all android handsets through Fring.

iPhone, however, becomes outdated so quickly - every couple of years the next one comes out

Your anti Apple bias is quite clear from that sentence.

There is a new iPhone each year. How many HTC phones are released each year - could you remind me?

I have both an iPhone and a HTC Desire, and overall the iPhone just shades the Desire, the only thing I think the Desire does a lot better is internet browsing (the way the browser reformats the webpage, so no matter the zoom it always fits on screen), however the iPhone is better at music and video, better at gaming, better for texting (the iPhone touch keyboard is much better, with fewer "finger slips"), has more polished apps (especially on a jailbroken iPhone).

If I could only have one phone it would be the iPhone.

Although in fairness, one should be comparing like with like, iphone only offer 1 model of handset with varying memory but aimed at a 'single' market sector. Other manufacturers offer handsets for all sectors of the handset market.
Remember not everybody wants all singing all dancing handsets.

The handset should not have to be jailbroken, however customisation is the appeal to some and applying an application like SPB shell, will take many handsets to another level, then it is just down to the hardware of the handset, eg radio , camera, gps etc

Yes but that only lets you use Skype for instant messaging...you cannot use Fring (or any other third party app on Android) to make worldwide phone calls or send SMS messages using your Skype account. On my iphone i have barred intl calls/sms for obvious reasons instead using Skype through 3G...why can't i do the same on my Nexus One?

IMHO The Nexus One is a good phone but nowhere near as good as the iphone 3GS+ for useability.

Which is best for doing more than one of all those together?

Android phones and the iPhone are each excellent - as it happens I witnessed a joky "phone-off" between a HTC Desire and an iPhone4 in a pub the other day, and while people do get bizarrely partisan for some reason, they are both amazing compared to what was on offer only a couple of years ago.

I don't like some aspects of Apple's control of the iPhone/iTunes/iPod etc ecosystem, especially where they stray into censorship rather than just making sure things work properly, but I'm also not overly impressed by the amount of tweaking needed with Android phones to set them up "how you want them". Other people though obviously really like the degree of personalisation available and spend ages on it.

My perspective is that IF you are already a Mac user, the integration with the iPhone just cannot be beaten: I have an old Powerbook, a Macbook (from work) an iMac and a couple of AppleTVs. My iPhone essentially set itself up with all my media. My contacts, calendars, bookmarks and so on are all synchronised instantly over the air with MobileMe (which I bought from eBay cheaply).

I've read reviews of the HTC Desire which emphasise how great it is once you spend half an hour or so integrating it with Facebook, GMail etc. That's fine for those who like Google and Facebook, but I am moving away from them for various reasons, so I actually prefer the tight integration in the Apple system, despite the fact you can get similar (but less integrated) functionality "for free" with things like GMail and Facebook.

If I used Windows PCs (as I used to years ago) I'd probably go for an Android phone.

It must have taken me all of three minutes to set up Gmail and type in my WEP password. I don't use social networking. Otherwise, my Desire worked fine and did everything I needed out of the box. I don't understand why anyone would need to spend half an hour setting up the Desire to realise 'how great it is"?
