My front garden gets a lot more sun than the back but it's open to the footpath. I could grow stuff there but I'm worried they would be vandalised round here...

PH I was a bit worried about that as I have planted out the front this year with a mix of edibles and flowers..but I put Kale, spinach, broccoli and sprouts there and nothing has walked..yet, probably most don't realise what they are and I tried to plant the stuff most people don't eat round here :D

NUALA I just posted my Rosehip syrup recipe I use on the preservers year thread if it'll be of use to you

I used to grow herbs in my sunnier front garden, no vandels, but unfortuantly lots of dogs. Why do some people let thier dogs foul in other peoples gardens? its just disgusting. A problem here is that most gardens have been turned into car parking, and so I suppose the dogs just prefer a bit of green, even better if it smells nice!!

I think it might work if the garden is fully fenced and big enough so that people would not just be able to lean over and pinch stuff.

    good luck with it!!!!!

Thanks D&DD - I will check it out!

I remember thinking it was very odd that they grew veggies in the front garden in The Good Life but now I think it's a great idea, just not one I've got around to trying.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Over winter and Spring we had purple sprouting broccoli growing in the flowerbed in the front, right under our kitchen window.:D
Now, we have gem squash growing there.
No room left in the garden as it is small.:(

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • We do have an allotment, because we have a tiny garden. We have a few herbs in pots and some tomatoes in hanging baskets in our back garden. I'm just wondering if I could be doing more... Actually I wouldn't be too fussed if things "walked" every now and again, as long as nothing is damaged.
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

anne123 - what a miserable lot your local council are for your gueriila gardening efforts. Real jobsworths.! But one edible you might be able to get away with growing is Bright Lights Swiss chard, or Scarlet Red curly kale, both of which you could claim were being grown "for decorative purposes", i.e. the yellow & red stems of the chard, and the nice red leaves of the kale.

I think a lot of front gardens are grossly under-used. We have three low fully boarded fences bordering ours and I now use our front garden mostly for growing soft fruit. It's reasonably sunny and as Council Tax is so high here, I reckon it has to earn its keep. I've got 2 redcurrants, 1 blackcurrant, 3 gooseberry bushes and some strawberries growing in two of the borders and a Reisling grape vine and blackberry bush against the south facing fence.

We've been very lucky and had no thefts (apart from a fox I caught nibbling the strawberries on one occasion) as I don't think people realise what type of bushes are growing behind the fence. I've even stuck in the odd tomato plant or two on occasions when I've sown too many plants. The big plant container outside our front door contains tumbling yellow tomatoes. I did catch the postman eyeing them up enviously the other day but our window cleaner thought they were poisonous...!!

We have also got a bay tree, some rosemary and lavender growing in pots out the front, on a square of paving tiles.

    No problems so far...touch wood.:rotfl:

On the up-side you could say that if anyone does take edibles they have a discerning eye - or need them! Both good really as long as no damage is caused and they don't decimate the crops.;)

Fantastic. I love Todmorden. I think its a great idea. It would be good if we could all get involved. Just plant something cheap which grows easily,in a pot oiutside the door, eg courgette, tomato, lettuce, cabbage, parsley, rhubarb, put up a little sign "Help Yourself". Others should catch on and idea will spread throughout your area. Dont worry about vandalism,it might happen,it might not, just dont give up!
