re really OS. Does anyone here live without electricity?

We have lived here for over 20 years - the first 18 without mains electric (though we did have an old diesel generator).

Im sure the squashes in the supermarket are old - the one I got yesterday had a hard leathery skin but the inside was perfect. Made baby food out of it along with sweet potatoes for little man - he loved it and it cost pennies for tubs and tubs. Cant wait till i get my new liquidiser - 10 quid Mr T - and he can have roast dinner!

Ginny, do you have a food processor or even a whizz stick.

I did my 2 roast dinners using these. Basically anything we had they had unless it was very spicy.

I used to cook for 4 instead of 2 and plated one extra portion for dh to take to work, the other got whizzed in the fp and then potted up. just add more gravy or veg cooking water to make more liquid if needed.
Obviously I added no salt to anything when cooking.

Both of mine loved fish pie and I then added to it once whizzed some very fine diced cooked carrot for some colour.

    Re: Foraging.

We will be back down to 'our' foraging grounds midweek hopefully. My uncle says the blackberry bushes are heaving with offerings as are the pear and apple trees thereabouts. We will forage as much as we need and as much as we can use, leaving a lot to be picked by others. Personaly i don't subscribe to any unwritten code about foraging. Who is to say whether blackberry bushes in the middle of no where are going to be have their fruit picked by locals a few miles away? My motto is pick what you will use and leave some for others.

Apparently you can just use sodium bicab - just a wee bit. I tried it and it was horribly salty but did clean my teeth. A bit of peppermint essential oil might make it a bit more palatable.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

In the past, when i have run out i have used salt to brush my teeth and on another occasion, bicarbonate of soda.

Here's a link that advises how to make diy toothpaste

Mardatha, I remember a few years ago on the dish, there was a thread about using soap. Some people made *tooth* soap, scented with peppermint EO. It wasn't as bad as it sounds apparently!
