Yesterday, I went wandering around the field next to MIL's house and gathered 3lbs of balckberries and 2lb of damsons. The crab apples weren't quite ready yet, I found more sloe bushes (which pleased FIL!) and I filched 4 windfall apples from the ground of the orchard in the castle next door. We also spotted that one of MIL's "bushes" in the front garden is actually a hazel tree, which had one clump of hazel nuts ripening.
This is the time of year, eespecially when there is some sunshine (and it was blazing yesterday) that DH and I would love to relocate to the country and near to them. Next trip down will include gathering a large amount of sloes for gin and possibly some crab apples if they are still on trees (and some regular apples if MIL has managed to get chatting to the caretaker in the castle in the meantime).
I need to get the onions under cover at home tonight - rain is due and they are reasonably dried at this stage. I can't plait them this year - slugs got all the stems, but they are a good size and far less problems with rot this year than the past few.
I spent the car journey back last night knitting (a lap blanket for DH's aunt) and working on my dream for a decent sized garden (DH's sister has just bought a 0.7 acre plot to build a house, and DH's brother is about to build next door to parents).

Fingers crossed here for you too, Ginny.
Am making blackberry jam as I type. Have spent all day making chutney. Marrow chutney seems to take ages to reduce so I'm not sure about that one - tastes good though. Pickled some beetroot too. Unfortunately, the rabbit is back at the allotment, so the rest of the beetroot is at risk. It's already had half a cabbage, dastardly little creature.

Please can we keep this on topic. Remember , the daily chat thread is for daily OS chat. This is not a replacement for the daily thread.
The thread started out with the following postIs anybody in here so OS that they can cook, eat and live without shopping for months on end ? Like past generations who maybe lived on a remote farm & only went to the town a few times a year ..? I would like to really try for this next year, and would welcome your ideas and tips on how to do it.
Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: While it’s easy to wander off-topic that often prevents newbies finding the information they want quickly and easily (please see this rule). I've just been reading a link on sky news regarding food prices and it says a lot of the foodstuffs you would need for long term storage which are classed as staples eg rice are the things which have really climbed in price recently.
