Im havving a bad day ...spent all day clearing out 30 blighted tomato plants - didnt know anything about blight but do now! So am clearing up after that mess. On the positive side I can now move the chicks to their sheltered winter side of the garden so making the most of the sunshine.
Yesterday was lovely though, met Smiley t for a cuppa and a bit of bargain hunting. then I got a phone call off a friend - could we go and fix her 1956 Morris minor for her. apparently the lights werent working , so we nipped down and changed the fuse for her - as a swopsie for the task she gave me a tub of amazing lilies, a hm tea loaf and a back support for the office chair - hows that for O/S!Clearing the junk to travel light

Aw that's a shame about your tomatoes Ginny. I watched Alys Fowler's The Edible Garden and she got really upset about losing her tomatoes to blight in it. I reckon if it can happen to a professional gardener, you've nothing to feel bad about! Sounds like you had a lovely OS day though with a nice bit of informal barter!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

Nevmind Ginny, next year try some indoors, they grow fine with no weather or pests to destroy them. Mine might finally turn red now we have a hot sunny day..
I am staying firmly inside - loads of bloody midges all over the place and every time I go out they all zoom in on me. I am all ITCHY as hell.
How easy is it Ginny to keep chickens really ? I think I should really start moaning and he will let me have some. My daughter was quoted £11 each though, thats a bit steep! I would take rescue birds anyway. But he is so uptight about anything living, he is too neat & tidy and does my head in. I like a bit of company in the garden and somebody to talk to. that isnt him. LOL !0 -

Mardatha its very easy to keep chickens and the mess is confined to the coop and run. I clean them out once a week compltely but empty the nest box every other day. I put a folded newspaper covered in shavings in the nest box them just fold it up and remove - the poo goes in the compost and the newspaper goes in the incinerator. They cost pennies too feed, a sack of feed lasts 3 of them for well over 2 months - 7.00 a sack. I feed them a jug full everymorning or you can have a feeded that lets them eat it whenever they want. Then the rest of the day they have cooked veg peel, bits of leftovers, herb, dandelions, stalks off beans and peas when they finish, slugs, worms...... Basically I only have wrappers in the bin now, no food. then it all turns into lovely compost. The Battery hen welfare trust sold me mine for 3.00 each, they live in a 2 storey rabbit hutch that i got for free and we made the run with wire from Wilkinsons.
Welsh Poppy its so sad to lose my toms, but I have 4 dishes I was ripening indoors so not all lost. Next year I will spray with bordeaux mix in late July when I have researched it as I use no chemicals.

(((((((((hugs)))))))) thats awful
I had a blight watch text only a few hours ago, my tatties got blight earlier this year, I would be gutted if my toms got it.
Had a very OS day today
Thanks to someone on here who told me about a wonderful foraging spot 1/2 hours drive away. I felt like a kid in a [STRIKE]sweat[/STRIKE] (should be sweet:o ) shop, spent hours there, lovely place in its own right.
Spent all afternoon turning bags of stuff into what I hope is yummy food and only stopped 'cause I've run out of jars, pie dishes etc, freezer space is looking doggy too, might have to "borrow" space in DS's:D0 -
Ginny, sorry to hear about your tomato's, we have only grown the tumbling ones this year and they have not done very well. OH seems to have forgotten we have them, disappointing, we had a good crop last year from both indoors and outside. We alswo had cucumbers, the first time we grew any. Wish we had a greenhouse......just no room for one.Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0

I remember we used to pick the nicest mushrooms near my Nana's house in the autumn but I wouldn't be confident enough to know what's safe. And we always picked blackberries too. I hope to get a few blackberries this year but I don't really know what else can be foraged for. There are some rowan trees but the berries are very high up and I haven't got a ladder so I'm ruling those out.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
