Hi! Hope you don't mind me popping in - am really enjoying reading this thread. Have been trying to be more OS since retiring as the last few years had become manic and I often chose to spend money rather than time in order to get everything in. It's like going back to how things were when we were first married (1970). I've always made bread and marmalade, but it's great having time to grow more veg, and get back to knitting and sewing again.
Loved Mardatha's comment re hanging out the holey polishing knickers! My Mum always turned old undies into cleaning rags!

I have grown 30 sunflowers for the seeds and am presuming I hang the heads in a paper bag somewhere dry till the seeds fall out? Anyone have a clue? I must have saved a bomb doing this and they are multi heads on one stem so havent taken up much space in the garden. Dd loves homemade health bars but the seeds now cost too much to buy.

Its chilly here in Manchester and very damp, my washing won't dry on the racks so have resorted to using the tumble dryer:eek:

Am going to spend the day making stuff as Dh is not too good today so he is resting. He is having to come to terms with very limited use of his left arm and cannot hold Dgs as much as he would like. The trouble with disability is the continual deterioration. Going away for 2/3 days next week so hopefully a bit of sea air will improve things.

Janebo12 I use that yoghurt recipe al lot and have tried loads of different yoghurts in it, if its for visitors I use a luxury toffee yoghurt -62p from Mr T and its fab but works just as well with homemade and a bit of flavour such as jam or vanilla extract. Thanks for posting it as i lost my copy

I just remembered I have yoghurt in the freezer to use up so will try that cake. It sounds delicious - thanks for sharing the recipe Jane!:T I wonder could I add some fresh fruit to it - I had the most delicious raspberry and yoghurt cake last year and I still drool a little thinking about it!

Glad I could help with the recipe - it is very nice and also really quick to make (a bonus when you have 3 children "helping" you lol)

I especially liked that bit in the link where she said she makes "one thing" for each meal and they just eat it until they are full. I like that, might try it. But make WHAT one thing....?!

I make this quite often - in fact we are having it tonight :o. It's really easy and makes a huge dishful. It makes around 6 "greedy-pig" portions, so OH and I will eat it for dinner for the next few days.

You can easily halve the recipe - just make sure you use the tomato soup as (IMHO) the flavour is quite crucial to the recipe. I have also added mushroom, peppers, etc.

I have no idea why it is called Cabbage Rolls

    Cabbage Rolls (Cheats Version)

1 lb lean ground beef (I just use ordinary mince)
    1 onion chopped
    1 tsp salt
    1/8 tsp pepper
    1 cup long grain rice
    1 can tomato soup (condensed)
    1 can mushroom soup (condensed)
    1 soup can water
    3 cups cabbage, shredded

Shred cabbage and place in a large dish. (I used a large lasagne/roasting dish, and around ¾ cabbage).

Fry Meat and drain off fat.

Add onion, salt, pepper and rice, stir.

Add soups and water, mix well.

Pour meat and soup mixture over the top of the cabbage. DO NOT STIR!!!

Cover pan with aluminium foil, and bake in a preheated oven Gas 4, 180° C, 350° F for around 2 hours.

It is yummy and so simple to make.

Hope this is of some use to someone :D

that sounds yummy Frugalista and if you have a cabbage you can keep the rest in stock and make it when you have run out of ideas. - note to self buy cabbage!

I usually stock up on the condensed soups, when they are on offer, especially with this in mind. It works with any cabbage - white, Savoy, sweetheart, green, etc - OH's favourite is Savoy.

I have a funny underwear story too.... I live in rented accommodation and one day the HA inspector came round to check out the damp in my bedroom.

Outside my bedroom I have a laundry maiden hanging from the ceiling. It's quite low as I'm under 5ft. Mr Inspector is 6ft if he's an inch.

I'm sure you can guess what happened next ....

Mr Inspector bumps into laundry maiden and ends up with a pair of my knickers draped over his head  I'm not sure which one of us wanted to disappear the most. " Ooh, erm, knickers!" he said, as he fished them off his head and waved them in the air. The shame! I sometimes see him when I walk the dogs and I've never been able to look him in the eye since :rotfl:

I now remove all underwear from the laundry maiden if a person I don't know is going into my bedroom.

ETA I mean official inspectors, I'm not in the habit of inviting strangers into my bedroom!!
