I remember my mum boiling up my brothers nappies on the stove. She had a pair of wooden tongs to stir them around and fish them out after they were done.
I had two in terry nappies when I lived on the top of a Welsh mountain without a washing machine. I also boiled them in a big pan on top of the stove using washing tongs to drag them out.
I remember distinctly my husband's boss coming round one evening and, after ten minutes, asking what we were having for dinner as it smelt "unusual" :rotfl:Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -

I can still remember my Mum boiling Dad's hankies in a special pan - I can remember the smell exactly. I wish I'd had these OS tendencies while she was still alive so I could tell her how much I admire her OS ways. It was second nature to her but I didn't appreciate it till recently ... must be getting old!
I was thinking about stocking up and minimising shopping trips again. I reckon winter is a good time for me to do that. I don't get snowed in but it can be tricky to get to the shops in bad weather. Stocking up on non-perishables in the autumn would be easy. I know lots of you are doing it already bit by bit.
And then fresh stuff; well i'm trying to eat seasonal veg as much as poss and there's not much around in winter. I'd have plenty of tinned tomatoes and frozen veg. Maybe a big sack of onions and spuds. And perhaps sprouting seeds for a bit of green stuff. Not sure about fruit though.
I'm trying to eat vegan (not going as well as I'd like) so dairy shouldn't be a prob. I saw huge trays of soya milk with a discount for buying in bulk. Best before April 2011 so that's fine. I always used to keep UHT and powdered milk in anyway. My tubs of marg seem to last ages and are fine well after the best before date. Vegan cheese seems to have a really long life (just as well cos it looks horrible so I have been putting off using it) and normal cheese can be frozen I think?
So in theory I could hibernate all winter I reckon!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

Oh well you've had lots of practice then. I don't really miss meat but giving up fish is trickier and cheese proved the hardest thing of all!

Where about in Scotland are you looking to go to Welsh Poppy? There are a few land agencies who run large estates that rent out cottages direct for the holiday markets, Bell Ingram, Finlayson Hughes, CKD Galbraith, Savils are some in the Perthshire/Angus area, but all tourist boards have self catering accomodation listing - and dont worry about missing the sheep - there are plenty up here too!!!!!Every days a School day!0
