For all those hoarders/jam makers just seen on another thread that Tesco could have a special pack of Tate & Lyle sugar of 15 kg for £8. Seems to consist of 15 x 1kg bags.

It's hard in a small space to get a decent stock in Ginny. I read of people putting shelves in all sorts of places :)
Well I'm a long long way from rolling into town on the wagon once every 6 months - but I can report that this week we only got milk and cream - oh and a pack of Costco sausages but that was your fault on here. You all went on about how good they were :D
We are spending a lot of money on coal but that's for the winter coming. This house would be pure misery without my stove.

My 15 x 1kg of sugar for £7.99 from Makro is still sat on the dining table as I haven't anywhere sensible to store it.

Last night I started some no knead slow rise bread which wants baking later for lunch. This is a first in a long time for me, I just can't make edible bread, pastry or gravy so had stopped trying. I was also reading the thread on making your own spreadable butter so I might give that a go later. Logically I could take it a step further and use the 99p/600ml double cream from Makro to make my own butter and then thin it down with vegetable oil. I must measure out the economics of that.

I was looking at tunnels for the garden yesterday, they aren't actually as expensive as I thought for the green mesh ones rather than plastic ones (rubbish at remembering to water stuff) and they would keep the chickens and dogs off the veg plot which would improve productivity. If/when DH finds a new job I think I will have one for Christmas/Birthday.

Oooh, sorry for going off-topic but could you tell me how you make that? I heard that the slow rise breads are more easily digested and the nutrients are more available to us too. Plus less work kneading! :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

It was in the veg box leaflet a few months ago.

Thanks Hex, will give it a whirl. Did it work for you? Not sure what I'll use for a pot but I'll find something. Wish I had my late Nana's old cast iron soda bread pot but it was given away.

    Hi all, lovely thread!

I guess nowadays living in the little house on the prairie isnt really feasible, not sure I'd want it anyhow as its nice having the dentist and doctor close by rather than rabid raccoons!

But its great to wean yourself away from a dependence on the supermarket's just in time mentality by only buying the basics you cant grow or make for yourself and in sufficient quantity to avoid unplanned trips to stock up.

DW loves mushy peas so every month or two, its several packets of leos dried peas cooked in HM chicken stock and frozen in margarine tubs. This joins the cartons of home grown raspberries, blueberries, blackcurrant pie filling and gooseberry granita. The blackcurrant, jostaberry and gooseberry jams should last until next year's crop, like the onions and garlic drying on racks in the garden. Its chutneys next :)

Its not just food though, making do and mending saves an awful lot of clothes shopping!
