You can make it with ordinary milk annie, but its more a faff. Something about boiling the milk for a certain time to sterilise it - whereas UHT you just heat it a bit. Trust me to find the lazy way ;)

The blackberries are still mainly green here, after my success with last years that I dug out of the freezer I can't wait to do more. Glad you dont have to pull the ends off cos I did last year and it made a mess!

Well done crusader Mardatha - ooh we can dress as Joan of Arc now - much better than a pith helmet! You are so right the support makes you give it a go!:)

Going to try marmalade for the first time, hope that works too. Got my sugar from poundland this morning.

Just made foccacia in the bread maker and was much better than the other breads I tried except the gingerbread - cut thin and layer with butter - not marg! (69p butter whoopsied in Mr T)

Actually I think I meant black currants (blush) !! The other black things that are berries and are still green, are brambles. I will do some more jam with them when they're ready. And now I think next year I will plant some fruit... blackcurrants, rasps, and maybe redcurrants. Although not sure if you can make jam from redcurrants?

Dunno about jam, but you can certainly make jelly from redcurrants - I think jam might be a bit "seedy" and if you make jelly you strain it so the seeds are no problem.

Ok ta. A neighbour with a big garden gave me the blackcurrants, and she has redcurrants too, so I thought I'd ask. I am sat here looking at gardening sites that sell fruit and veg plants..:D My moneysaving crusade is def clashing with my self-sufficiency/survivalist crusade ! The OH asking why the hell I cant buy a cheap jar of jam in a shop like "normal people".
He been married to me for 900 years, he should know I'm not normal people !!!

Mar, I will be sending you raspberry plants in November, they multiply like mad, and I have loads, my 6 little canes turned into 50 very quickly.
Scotland produces some of the tastiest raspberries, so you should be fine with them;)

mardatha step away from the sites - they are very over priced! Do you have a pound shop/wilkinsons? Much cheaper if you have a good root round for reasonable plants. Fig trees for example - £25 or so online, have seen from £3 in Wilkos, £8 in local garden centres.
Blackcurrant jam is just lovely, we scrumped a couple of pounds from the community garden at the library. It would have been less shameful if the boys hadn't told the library assistnat why we were there.....

I think this qualifies as pretty old stye...I just picked all my broad beans then separated them from their pods...made a batter, dipped the pods in and deep fried them for lunch...not a typical Sunday lunch maybe, but very yummy!
