Can I sound a note of caution here - about hanging that crystal pendulum in the window? I thought about doing so - but wondered whether the Sun's rays might get "concentrated" through it and spark off a fire in my place. I decided against it.

I recently read a newspaper article about someone having a bit of crystal in the window (?think it might have been a crystal ball type paperweight???) which did exactly that - and the house burnt down:eek:

    Thanks. :)

'Tis ok though. The window only gets the first rays of the morning for a short while and the rays via the crystal only fall on the wall of the stairs. Fun for one of my cats who loves trying to catch them!

Aw what lovely memories you've all jogged for me with talk of those pulleys/sheila maid airers. We used to have one when i was growing up. It was above the kitchen table and was brill for drying clothes, towels and sheets. I would love to have one here but sadly i wouldn't know how to put one up and i don't know anyone else who could do so either.

At present i have a stand alone clothes airer in the spare bedroom but it doesn't really get the sun back there so the clothes don't dry very quickly. In winter i am loathe to use the tumble dryer so have wet stuff sprawled all over the radiators.
    Thanks for the memories folks!

  • I would be so lost without my "maid" or "the rack" as it's called in this house- after being in the middle room, a bedroom and then the top of the stairs I have eventually decided that the kitchen is the best place for the rack! (but I take the clothes down before frying onions mmm....eau de food the newest perfume !)

My first batch of jam making with cherry plums has turned out a beautiful ruby colour and tastes lovely - the fruit is still dropping down so another batch is imminent and 2lbs of them are lazily soaking up brandy ready for :xmassmile (hic!)- I am ashamed to admit that for 15 years I just let the birds/insects have the fruit without bothering to find out what they were but now they've got to make do with the bruised ones:o
A friend of mine has just restarted dowsing and she loves it so I'm hoping she'll show me and let me have a try - erm..... she's my pagan friend and I love listening to her and her ideas
I love catching up with all the memories
May you fill up the great clutterbucket of life and may all of your leaks be in cheese sauce:D
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without:cool:

Yes years ago a few of us would have probably been ducked in the village pond:rotfl::rotfl:

My daughter is often drawn to buying odd things cos she 'knew I wanted it' and my Mums phone is nearly always engaged at random times cos she felt the urge to ring me, exactly when I rang her. One of my dearest friends is actually a practising white witch and often sends me recipes for herbal remedies. I really try to go the herbal way when one of us gets ill and have tried many many things to help Dh. It was a bit of a coup when the pound shops started selling tiger balm cos it was so expensive before. We use it for lots of aches and pains. I just wish I had a comfrey plant - never got round to getting one.

    Now thats O/S !

    candles.....

i dont know if they save you money, but i have got loads of them around the place, that i havent used, they were either presents or i had them for nothing, i bought my t light ones, but only ever used a few of them...lol...

so i am going to do myself a candle box, and when i find them scattered around the place put them all in one place, and maybe have a 'no light night' once a week or something, for one.. not to waste them, and 2 to save a bit of money.... but to be honest... i do like it when the house lights are off, and there are just a couple of candles lite around the place.

This weekend i have been sorting out some of my vintage clothing and linen... and people really did look after their belongings years ago..... i have some vintage aprons and night shirts etc... and you can see where they have darned a hole in them, flip the workmanship even by darning a little hole is so good and fine... and stood the test of time,

I have got one night gown that has turned a creamy colour with age, so i dont know whether to put it on a boil wash in the washing machine, or do it they way my granny used to boil her cotton t. towels.. by putting them in a big saucepan on the cooker....and leave it boil away for an hour or two...

what do you think? the old style way? or in the washing machine?

If it's just the one thing you need to boil wash, you might as well do it on the stove.

Yes try try a big pot on the stove, I do that and it gives a lovely smell to the house :)
Also remember (going into survivalist mode here ) that you can boil a kettle on tealights. I learned this ages ago in here from Sammy Kaye. Make a circle of at least 9 tealights, make a triangle shape out of 2x1" spars of wood, rest on top of that an old oven shelf or grill pan mesh, and pop the kettle on there. Takes 25 mins to boil. Great for powercuts if you have no gas :)

Thats a handy one to know, I wouldn't have thought of it myself. And tealights are so cheap.:)
