..........well, along with chocolate, those are the main food groups, aren't they? I agree with the sentiment to apply tea to all circumstances, its the Medicinal Compound of the kitchen arts.

 Imagine if tea ran out........I know you can make fruit and herb teas but I like my plain black Indian tea.......it's about the only thing keeping me upright most days. Family have suggested I get it infused on a I.V. line to save time.

Have just been adding to the Food Bank at big Mr T's out of town. Grief, is bulk-shopping hard work or what on a pushbike?!

:rotfl:When the DDs were small and hurt themselves I used to "apply chocolate until the crying stopped". That was a saying of my old and wise GP

    it'd scare you all :rotfl:
I've done a bit of a stock up recently due to the commodities market being so
Fortunately there have been some good offers on oils, fats, flours, sugar and suchlike so have hopefully bought at the bottom of the price rises and it'll last a while.

The thing is you don't always realise the extent that things like flour and sugar are used in products eg frozen chips are often coated in flour to stop them sticking together in the bag, sugar is used to sweeten tomato sauce etc etc

Rosie those loorolls were a great deal I grabbed a few as we seem to get through so many!

:) I'm good to go for oils but flour is a problem as I have limited storage. I've just bought 2 bags of breadflour at Mr T and will wrap it in plastic and give it a jaunt into the mini-freezer as soon as I can free up some space, but it won't be able to stay there. Wiser heads have advised this trick to discourage weevils. Gordon Bennett, do I covet a proper pantry. I wa born and bred a peasant, a pantry of my own is my birthright (sob :(). Please don't tell anyone who knows me in real life that I am keeping tinned goods under my bed, I'd never live it down. :o

I'm really not sure which is the REAL life - I tend to think my lovely satisfying OS life is the real me shining through, and find the more mainstream consumerist lifestyle much more alien. The beauty of threads like this one is finding so many like-minded people - we probably seem weird to some people, but I wouldn't mind betting that on average we're at least as happy as they are, probably more so. Simple pleasures are so often underrated.

    WARNING!!!!

I was browsing Google for grain mills and one of the links I clicked on started downloading one of those fake alert trojans - you know, the one that keeps making a fake virus alert pop up saying you have 50 gazillion infections and do you want to upgrade your protection now. IT'S A SCAM and will not only pocket your money but will then make loads of fraudulent transactions using your credit card details

My DD2 has had this sort of thing several times because they hide in links to web pages about teen idols etc (One Direction etc). I never thought I'd get it from surfing self sufficiency websites!!!

Anyway, if you do get this I know from bitter experience how to get rid of it. It's not easy because the wrteched thing stops you accessing the internet.

If you see it starting to load hit the off button on yoir computer straightaway - don't worry about shutting down properly. One thing I have found is that it doesn't seem to affect your documents or other files. This may stop it in its tracks. However it may not so to be on the safe side go on to the next stage as follows:

When you restart your computer hit F5 repeatedly until you can start in Safe Mode (it may be a different key for you - find out now!!)

Then do a System Restore to the previous day (or whenever the most recent System Restore point is). Your computer will then allow you to access the internet when it retstarts. Download the free version of Malwarebytes and update it straightaway and do a full scan. It will probably find something lurking such as Fake Security Alert. Delete anything you find

    This works for me.

But why did the hackers ever think it was worth their while hiding this thing in a google link about grain mills????

:D That's a very wise remark, Winchelsea. I used to be a bit worried about being ODD as I didn't find too many people in my life who shared OS life to a degree ( I have a couple now, and our eyes light up at the same kind of things, which is great). I have always loved the simple things and actively loathed many of the so-called pleasures which are supposed to be fun. On a course, I remarked idly that I loathed nightclubs and the leader waved an imaginary magic wand and intoned that I was now absolved from going to them! Bit of a laff, but with a serious side. I find it a lot easier to go my own way as a late-forty-something than I did as a younger woman. I'm taking lessons from my friend and neighbour, SuperGran, who is street-smart, a player and knows everyone and everything. She looks like a dumpy lil ole lady but she's a killer comedienne and hell-on-wheels. I'm planning on being a wise old bird in about 3 decades, with a default setting for battleaxe if crossed.

:) I read something in a book by Tom Hodgkinson about simple living and he remarked that he used to see men and women in their gardens and thought that they were "boring" then he got the bug himself and discovered how joyful it is and added it to Drinking Beer as one of his most favourite things. Sweet.

I wonder whether younger people might be more inclined towards this O.S. lifestyle now that the alternative seems to include getting "pre-loaded" on drink, followed by clubbing on a regular basis and not too worried about who they "go home with". If I had my time again <cue "when I was a youngster" with accompanying violins"> I simply wouldnt be interested in that sort of lifestyle:eek:. I did pubs and clubs a la 1970s version of a night out regularly - but I think those sorta nights out would be a bit passe these days:rotfl::rotfl:

Yep..."wise old bird" with default setting of "battleaxe" sounds like a good role model to me (with a bit of Percy Thrower - female version - thrown in for good measure).

<picks up a lump of soil for inspection as to its growing qualities>

I'm certainly planning to be an innocent-looking "little old lady" when I get a few years older <cue - "but you want to see how she can wave a stick around pretty sharpish if she wants to:rotfl:". I dont need a walking stick - but I have a feeling they will have a lot of "other" uses:D.

Speaking of SuperGran's "killer" tendencies - have you still got Idiot Boy in residence - or has he delighted you by finding a "home" in the nearest river yet?:rotfl:

:( He's still alive, Ceridwen. I know because he woke me up at 5.35 am this morning when he came in. And kept me awake by yakking on his mobile phone.......grrrr!

:) Tomorrow it the first date that TOCD (the other council department) can legally apply for a court date to have a hearing for possession of his flat. I'm hoping KillerShark, TOCd's area officer, will be on it. She works Mon-Weds. The H.O has promised to keep me updated as much as possible subject, of course, but not breaching Data Protection Act 1998. I hope to have heard something by the end of the week.

:) SuperGran popped across with the papers early yesterday evening and said there are 4 bin bags outside his flat, so don't know if that's a co-incidence or if he's getting ready to clear out. The H.O. did say that Idiot Boy didn't seemed too bothered about the prospect of losing his flat, which made H.O's job difficult as trying to get someone to mend their ways if they're not bovvered by the ultimate sanction of eviction is a toughie.

:) When SuperGran popped over at 5 pm on Friday she was waiting for me to open my door when this bloke we don't know let himself out of NiceLad's flat next door, locked it and walked off, cool as a cucumber. NiceLad hasn't been seen since before Xmas, nor has his girlfriend, so we're a bit concerned about this might be the start of an illegal sub-let. SG saw same man yesterday morning. We have no idea who the hell he is. I rang the Council and got a member of my team to put me onto KillerShark's voicemail and left a message she'll pick up tomorrow. She's moving to repo next door for abandonment so she needs to know. Doesn't do any harm to do a favour.....

:) Good job you're not living in Provincial City, Ceridwen, cos I cleared a large Mr T of bargain pasta yesterday morning.:rotfl:
