Chocclare what a fab story - bartering is alive and well. I always wanted a light sabre but one that makes a noise ! sorry Im a sad Star Wars fan :T

Ah, but you see, you're not, otherwise you'd WANT to make the noise yourself. :D:D (And you'd go online to the various websites and buy Jedi food packs to keep on your belt...I know you think I'm joking...)

Yes Mardatha even snuggling up by the fire gets boring after a bit doesnt it? I think we all need something new on here to make ourselves - any body got any ideas now that canning seems to be a bit expensive ? Come on Ceridwen you are usually full of interesting info. We have done the cheese, yoghurt, bread, socks and Uncle Tom Cobbeley and all - lets have something we can do thats cheap and very fulfilling. And to cheer Mardatha up maybe it should have a link to sweeties!

Will probably dream about canning and custard tonight. :D

Well, I did suggest knitting dishcloths a while back, but mar laughed at me :D

Canning isn't expensive as long as you stick to fruit and tomatoes (which are a fruit I suppose). You can cook those in a plain common or garden saucepan as long as it's big enough, or in the oven.

Sweeties? You can mix peanut butter and icing sugar with digestive biscuits and chocolate to make Reese's cups sort of thing. Yum.

sounds a nice bikkie recipe. the fuel price is getting to me too. I think real old style of shoping one a month or less might be really about to happen sometime soon.

I wonder how many people will do that. I suppose it isn't all bad if it teaches us to be more self reliant...?

Am reading a book called "My East End" by Gilda O'Neill. Life in London's east end between the wars onwards - and the differences are amazing. Kids playing outside (like I did) all day until dark; neighbours helping each other out with food, pots to cook it in, shoes even . Everybody rallying round when a neighbour was ill and could do her washing etc.
Such changes in life now aren't there.
