I would never have managed without the patches, and a lot of sheer bl00dy mindedness, as my OH still smokes, as does my daughter.

I used to get out of bed, come downstairs and light a ciggie before I had even put the kettle on! Maximum I could go without one was 2hours, although I used to start getting twitchy after 1½....any longer than 2 hours and I was ready to rip peoples heads off! lol

:T Thanks Hippeechiq you just gave me the final kick up the bum, which prompted me to finally sign up to the Quit line. I have been 'thinking' about it for way too long, feeling like a social pariah and feeling bad about my smoking. I don't actually smoke all that much (two packs per week) and my coffee comes as first priority of a morning. I just filled in the details to apply for a Quitpack, which includes vouchers for eight weeks supply of subsidised patches and a choice of lozenges or gum. Apparently, I AM a heavy smoker according to their assessment of my habit and they suggest I need both patches and gum/or lozenges. I have done the gum thing before and found it vile. I tried the patches many moons ago when they were new and they made me have terrible nightmares and generally made me feel spaced out. BUT I shall try again in the new year!!!!

I last 'gave up' about eight or nine years ago and stayed off them for well over a year; which worries me more than anything knowing how easy it is to undo all the good work. I don't have the staying power, BUT if I don't try I'll not ever give them up and maybe this time will be the LAST time. I have decided the first thing I will do with the 'savings' is get my teeth cleaned / whitened, then I might not be so tempted to relapse.

Hypnotherapy cured me of the addiction. Not touched one since! This will be 5 years in January. Others I know used Allen Carrs The Easy Way to stop smoking. I think there is a thread on it somewhere.

Never give up giving up. Good luck

MissyChrissy - that's so inspiring the way you replaced a bad habit with a good one!:T I've never smoked but I have plenty of bad habits I could/should apply that philosophy to.

Kiwi - best of luck, you sound really determined! You might want to check out the 16 hour patches so you won't be wearing it overnight and hopefully nightmares won't be an issue. But no doubt the QuitLine will tell you everything you need to know. Well done you!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

  • i gave up smoking 30 years ago aftr several failed attempts. saved me a fortune. its does literally burn money. i found it easy to give up after working out just how much i spent on cigs in a year. you have to be brutally honest. it will shock you into giving up.
  • Have to say, I'm loving this thread :)

Was sat here this afternoon thinking about how next year I want to go back to basics. Our grocery bill is far too big, with too many processed and convenience foods. I love cooking so theres absolutely no reason why I shouldn't be doing it!

Also, Christmas this year has been expensive and, inspired by Kirsties Homemade Christmas, I want to make presents etc for next year. Figure I should start early on that one as may take a while!

So: My OS resolutions for the new year are:

    * Make dinners, cakes etc from scratch as much as possible
    * Batch cook and freeze
    * Make my own chutneys / jams etc
    * Start on homemade xmas presents for 2011
    * Limit use of heating - my family DO own jumpers and can jolly well use them!!:rotfl:

    xx

  • Oh and forgot to say, Mardatha, I have a larder type cupboard in my kitchen (just a small one) which is currently filled with complete rubbish. In between christmas and New Year I'm going to sort it out and turn it into a proper larder :)

We want before & after pics !! :D
Well I'm feeling very smug. Which usually leads to a fall!!! - but I can't help it. Sitting watching the total chaos at airports and rail stations, & then looking round my warm quiet livingroom with the big stove belting out heat, knitting (yet another pair) socks and eating choc eclairs :rotfl:
I dont need the latest toy/gadget/designer handbag or cruise holiday. I'm content to just potter round here and the garden and maybe take a drive to the seaside on a nice hot day in summer. Lots of folk would think that's dead boring...but right now I wouldnt swap with them :D

Actually, that sounds pretty good to me :) I'm a real homebody - so am determined to make my home more homely next year.

Knitting socks is on my list!! Also going to have a bash at cushions and throws. I'm a novice knitter so may need a whole lot of luck!:rotfl:

I'm in complete agreement with you there! So many people think I have such a dull life, but personally, I think it's the opposite. My life is filled with my family, homecooking/baking/preserving, garden, allotment and my sewing room. I actually don't know how I have time to go to work full-time!! :D:D

OK my post disappeared again!! I have to agree too Mardatha, I am poor but happy and a trip to the seaside recharges my batteries. I would feel guilty if my relatives were sat in Heathrow waiting for a plane - it looks so cold in there and uncomfortable. Lets face it , it would be more sensible to delay Christmas than go through all that.

I have just made lebuchken for my Brother who is too wealthy for me to try and buy something for, he is totally happy with his little hamper from me. i got some little bottles of Wolf Blass wine in Poundland today and that finishes his pressie off. We are having a totally homemade or second hand Christmas and it looks like its going to be a good one despite the weather, and lets face it if Mardatha can feel so content frozen in up a hill in Scotland I can make the most of what I have here. Maybe some presents won't get to people till New Year but what the heck!
